  • Rear Caliper O-Ring

So last week I rode my bike to work as normal, everything was fine on the way in. Got out to leave, and noticed I had no rear brake, the pedal just went to the stop with no pressure.

I grumbled and rode it home on the front brake (which is fine, honestly), and tore it apart that night. Pads were OK, but the rear caliper had leaked fluid and the system was extremely low. I figured there was some grit or something behind the o-ring, so pulled caliper and master cylinder apart and cleaned thoroughly (though it was all relatively clean). Put it back together, bled perfectly fine.

Queue a week of bad storms, today is nice and I'm taking a 140mi trip to go camping tonight, so I load up on the bike this morning -- there are no leaks in the rear, so I figure all is OK. Ride to work, no events, park, and notice that there are a few drops of fluid leaking from the rear caliper, running down the bracket.

    Crap.

So, I guess I'm going to go ahead and take my trip tonight and just make sure that I top off the master cylinder over the weekend, but I need to be able to replace that rubber o-ring in the caliper, I guess. Ebay still the best/fastest place to get it, and that's about the only thing it could be, right? I don't guess anyone would have it locally, would they?

I've thought about going ahead and ordering a new piston while I'm at it because the one in the rear is a little scored up, and could use replacing.

If the piston is damaged, that's your leak. Do replace the seal, as the piston has probably ruined it. These guys... http://hvccycle.com/brake-caliper-pistons.html ... have both the piston and seal kit...

Argh, you're right. The damage to this piston is largely above the line that would contact the seal (near the lip where the dust boot goes in), but I think enough of it is below that it has scraped up the seal, which is hard and not as flexible as I think it should be anyway . Good deal, thank you!

I guess I am just going to keep the master cylinder topped off for the trip this weekend, and deal with front brake only, if it comes down to it. I'm packed and have the bike ready to roll at work now. Worst case I have all the tools needed to tear down brake system at the camp site, and can do it in about 10 minutes now.

Sorry to bump my own thread, but short of pulling the caliper apart in the parking deck at the office, anyone know what the rear caliper piston size is on my 1981 Special? I want to say it has "38mm" stamped on the back of the piston, but I may be going slightly wonky in the brain, so who knows.

If so, that should be part HVC200106-5 from HVC
