I only had one time when any of mine ever rattled on quality regular-grade fuel, and Don will appreciate this....

I was running across the Hanford Nuclear Reservation desert from Yakima to I-90 in blast-furnace heat on my '78 (this was in the early 80s) and had the hammer down trying to get somewhere where it was cooler. About 20 minutes into this high-speed run (two-up, towing my trailer), the bike started pinging if I tried to get more 90 mph.... I can't stress too much how hot it was. Finally pulled into the small town of Othello and I swear the temp felt like it dropped 30 degrees. As we were going through town, a time/temp display (in the shade no less) read out 101 degrees, so the temp out on that desert must have been over 120.... We stopped and cooled both the bike and us, and after leaving town never had any more problems; but we never ran in heat like that again...

The SG I rebuilt and sold last year ran fine on the local name-brand regular, including a full-throttle off-idle pull in 5th gear. I have had some issues in the past with off-brand fuel, but you get what you pay for...

If that bike could talk... The names it would have called you once you got to othello. I know the area you are speaking of. There is no place to hide out there. I went to WSU in pullman. I could tell you stories for days about stuff breaking down on me in the middle of nowheres-ville coming home to vancover. I use to work on the university golf course during the summer. 4th of July in 98 I resided to go home for the weekend. My ex500 ninja left me on the side of the road just outside the umatilla proving grounds. Not a good day.

Always try and put name brand gas in everything. Sometimes you just buy what's available in some of the 1 horse towns you come across

Kong seems happy with E-10 and Sea Foam or Berrymans. Lately I've been using Berrymans because it's $4 instead of $8 like Sea Foam. Bike seems happy with either. However, I do run some E-free Premium now and then. Could detect no difference in either power or mileage, but then one day I could and it was impressive. Last time out, over the hill east 100 miles I got 42.5 on E-free. On the way back over the hill west with E-10 I got 42.3. If he has to sit a while, I like the tank to be full of E-free and Sea Foam.

The only difference I can see between SeaFoam and Berryman's (besides the price) is Seafoam has a stabilizer element to it and Berryman's is pretty much a solvent/cleaner.

I'm currently helping a friend resurrect a Honda 1982 CX500 Custom, and am running Berryman's through it for a couple tanks while I am working on the bike (FD fluid change, coolant change, front brake caliper and MC rebuild, etc). This bike is extremely fortunate in that it has been stored with gas in the tank and Stabil in the gas. No signs of the carbs being gummed up or otherwise in bad shape. Choke works, idles great, runs out very well, so Berryman's will help with what little crap exists in the fuel system. So far it has not freed up a whole lotta crap and made things worse, so I keep my fingers crossed in that respect, but I believe it will be fine based on the cleanliness of the tank, etc.

How about the Lucas fuel treatment, the tan-ish colored stuff? Says it contains no solvents, if I remember correctly, and claims to clean the fuel system and carbs/injectors. I buy it by the gallon, and have no complaints, as I don't have any fuel system issues in my bikes or cars that I run it in, and I use the Lucas treatment every other tank or every 3rd tank at least.

Howard, I too buy the Lucas by the gallon. I use it in everything. I originally started using it in my 94 f250 with the idi non-turbo diesel. Now every few tanks I put it in the wifes car. And I've been known to squirt a little infuriated bikes every now and then. It works wonders in my diesel. Not sure about the rest.

As for seafoam I'm a believer as most of you know already.

I used to run both Sea Foam and Lucas in my Maxim 650. It needed a carb overhaul, but I was new to bikes and didn't want to mess it up. It ran like a scalded dog with both in the gas. Haven't used Lucas in Kong. Might get some. It's sposed to extend range on a tank. I got almost 50 mpg out of my Maxim one time. Then I learned how to use the right wrist a little more.
Kong has sat a winter with Sea Foam in the gas, no issues. This year I kept him going at least once a month. When he did sit, it was with E-Free and Berrymans. No worse for the non-wear.

I've felt I picked up a bit of gas mileage with the Lucas when I run it. The only way it was explained to me was it increases the temperature of combustion and thus more power per stroke, per se.

I flat out don't buy that, so I'm still searching for a real answer.

Hmm...well, nothing for it. I suppose I should just go suffer, put on my gear and burn this tank of Super out of the bike to I can put regular in it

Joab, you're a man after my own heart. The best thing I can do for Kong is load him up with what ever gas I can find, then let it out slowly over a span of 100-200 miles. Sometimes he needs a reload @ about 130 or so, but he always sounds real happy by the time we get home. Put Lucas in him today. Idle is smoother and of course, it's easy to twist some power out of him.

I'm a firm believer in most every product Lucas makes. I run their Heavy Duty gear oil in everything... including the mid and final drives in Old Man... I get about 3 more mpg in my old diesel running their fuel treatment in it. I put some in the wifes car every 3rd tank. They make an ethanol conditioner with stabilizer I've been meaning to try in my boat.... some day I'll remember
