Those sites are helpful, but aren't 100% accurate and fail to show some available parts swapping due to finish differences. One thing to remember, the parts fiche lists service parts, which aren't always the same as production line parts...Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

the Yamaha part number has quite a bit of information in it you you can read it, but notice that the part number for say a XS400 (2L0-24110-00-6J) and a XS1100 (2H7-24110-00-05) while sharing the center number are no way the same part... sometimes a gas tank is just a gas tank

There's one large caveat about reading the part number.... the model code may not always agree with your bike. Yamaha didn't change part numbers unless the part actually changed generally; that code represents the first bike it was used on, so when it's used on later models it will still retain the same model code.Fast, Cheap, Reliable...
