so i was working on my bike, and i turn the key off, but it stays running...i hit the kill switch to stop the motor, take the key out, and the power stays on...i start the bike, and with the key in the on position, i can remove the key, bike stays on...with the key in the off position, the bike stayed running, even after removing the key...holy crap! whats the deal?

nevermind i found the problem...the fuse box had somehow grounded itself out against the metal frame it connects to...

however, should i be able to remove the key while in the on position?

Don't know if that's correct or not, but the key has come out of my Venturer's ignition while on, for some 30+ yrs. now........

Hmm...fuse box grounded out, keeps bike running with key off. I do nto follow how that would be the solution. Likely is your key switch is not operating correctly.

I am miles and miles form my XS, so I can't go check, but it seems to me the key will not remove unless it is turned off, or to lock. Not certain though.

I would take the key switch apart and clean and check it. Not to tough to do really.

The key often comes out when in the ON position. It's not actually supposed to but they often do. Mine did.

As the pins in a tumbler and the landings on a key wear out a key can eventually be removed when it is not supposed to be. My XS key comes out, I have owned several vehicles where I could pull the key out. Not a big deal. Until the day the key won't turn.the lock anymore.

I would suggest pulling the lock though and cleaning it and lubing it all up.

Hmmm..........guess that means the tumblers were wore out on my Venturer's switch when I bought it new...........

Okay Nate......was gonna mess with ya some more, but your too easy....lol. By design, key removal when on was intentional by Yamaha for a variety of reasons. Least pertaining to the Venturer. Can remove keys from ignition while running to quickly access locked trunks/right side fairing compartment lid. Actually was an additional selling point pertaining to the Venturer. So there's your 'something else'......................

Happened once many years ago hitting a 'wheel popper' pothole at 50mph, and snapped of the flip-up plastic cover on stereo. Saw the key-set skidding on pavement in mirror and retrieved them. Bought another stereo cover so it could be snapped off again same scenario two weeks later. Decided didn't need that cover so bad after all. Now has a felt lined vinyl soft cover that slides over stereo, covers speakers and snaps to fairing at speaker ends. Called SOUND IDEA on top front of cover in bold letters. Have never seen another one like it since. Even having Polk all-weather speakers, it sure keeps all that area looking new underneath. Even the carwash has no ill-effect being covered like that.
