  • Petcock Filter Towers

Does anyone know where I can score some filter towers for the 78/79 Std petcocks? Mine were trashed when i got it. Ebay has em for like 30 a piece. Wondering if there is a cheaper alternative. Thanks for any help.

I've never been able to find them... and or gave up on looking. I just added inline filters down hill from the petcocks. I put mine right by the T's so I can see them easily. and then ran longer hoses to opposite side petcocks to get some slack in the hose and keep the angles from kinking. It's worked so far.

      The '78/'79 is NET,FILTER 1 (1J7-24514-02-00) $26.61

Don, your's is $15.23. Have a look at item #3. You need two of them. Fuel cock assy

Lance, after doing research on this in recent days, this is the cheapest alternative. I'm not sure it's best, but replacing the petcocks with something else will cost more. Those towers will restore normal function of "RESERVE".

I have a standard tank on my special.... thanks for the info thou, If I ever find myself with the petcocks out of the tank again I may have to replace them. I just cut the broken screen pieces of mine out and use the tru-view or what ever they are called inline filters. My Buddies bike shop has them hanging by the counter. $3.69 each... run em on everything.

          Don,

Did you cut those towers in such a way that you still have reserve?

Yes.... The main body of them was still in 1 piece but the screens were a little worse for wear. so I took out the die grinder and made just the screened area's go away. Reserve still works. I was gonna hack the whole thing off.... I'm glad I looked them over before doing such a thing.

So what is "Reserve" on these bikes and what would those towers have to do with anything? They are just plastic filters on the petcocks. I am not understanding how they would affect a function of the petcocks. Unless the "Reserve" function of the petcocks just allows the bike to use the lower portion of the tank (past low fuel indicator)...and so, needing to be filtered better...? Someone please explain. I can't believe it took me this long to ask this question but here it is.

Marty, where did you get these numbers? Yamaha has never shown these as separate parts that I could find because on the standard petcocks, the filter is riveted to the petcock body. The Special filters are just pressed into those bodies, but they don't show the filter for them either...

And they can't use the same filter in any case, as the recess is shaped differently.

reserve is the last gallon or so of gas in the tank. the stand pipe is built into the screen assembly if I remember correctly. So if you remove the assembly all together you will not have this "RESERVE" to be able to switch to as now you on and reserve are @ the same level, bottom of the tank. On a bike like mine where the gas light is not operational due to a standard tank on a special, the tank sending unit and warning light don't talk right to each other. So when the bike starts to spit and sputter I know I need to switch over to reserve and go find a gas station in the next 20 to 30 miles.

                      Lance,

If you look at that plastic tower, it is in two halves. One side goes to the "ON" port in the fuel cock, and the other to "RES". The side with the short screen goes to the "ON" port. The long screen goes to the "RES" port.

As you can see, the short screen side can only draw fuel down to a certain level. The long screen side will get you near the bottom of the tank. That's why you need those filter nets or plastic towers for normal fuel cock function.

It's clearer in this photo. The long pipe is "ON". The short pipe is "RES". The internals of your filter net work just like those two pipes.

                        Steve,

I got the XS1100E PN here: XS1100E fuel tank

                        The XS1100SF PN here: XS1100SF fuel cock-diaphragm-piping

If you look here: XS1100SG fuel cock-diaphragm-piping You can see these parts keep changing between models and years.

The Longview, TX dealer I linked in the previous post is because they usually come up with the lowest price.

Well done Jet....Well done. so really I could just throw a makeshift filter in the petcock and eliminate the RES function of the petcocks as long as I have a functioning fuel level indicator. Then either the ON or RES function would allow gas to flow to empty. From the sounds of it they aren't that important and not really worth spending $60 on. To be honest...some crafty form of those brass tubes could be another option. I will do some playing as my petcocks are dissasembled anyways. On a side note, those towers are a pain in the, you know what, to get out without snapping them off inside the body. I will post a pic if I can get something worth while rigged up.

Given the fact that the electrical connections on these bikes are always suspect, and that the only way you know your fuel gage is not working is when you run out, I'd look ofr a way to rig up that reserve function. These bikes are to heavy for pushing to the next station!
