  • well i was left stranded again...

so after what ended up being the longest night of my life, flat tire, lost cell phone, yada yada yada, i was left stranded in downtown houston on a sunday morning at 9am, nobody in sight...it would appear that my 1 and 4 cylinder werent firing ( when i could get it to start i felt the pipes and 1 and 4 werent hot) ive posted about a WOT mis

    http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread...&highlight=WOT

still have yet to try to sort this out, and im not sure if they are related or not. Anywho, so i got the side panels, seat and tank off ( sitting on a downtown sidewalk btw) and i start fidling with wires and checking connections, it started and ran fine....i dont get it...
Also i tested it on the way home it was strong all the way, except the WOT issue was still there...

If you've got 1 & 4 cutting out it's an ignition problem. Check the coil that's running those 2 cylinders and the pickup coil wires. It is more than likely one of those. If not your probably looking at a TCI problem.

Based upon the itermitent function, my best guess is the pick up coil wires.

The 1&4 cylinders run off the same coil. There is a chance that the coil lost a connection (possibly internally), then when you fiddled with it, the connection was restored. Try tugging on all the coil wires while it's running and see if that makes a difference.

With your setup you would lose either 1 & 2 or 3 & 4 in that situation.

If you lose the 1/2 or 3/4 cylinders, it's a fuel problem. If you lose 1/4 or 2/3, it's an ignition problem, so based on your first post look at the ignition...

And the pickup coil wires under the left engine cover..............most likely culprit.

so it keeps happening on and off. ive already got a set of new coils coming, but im starting to think that the gremlin may be in the wiring and not the coils themselves. Is there a way i can check to see if it is the coils? other than simply replacing them that is. Im going to be doing that tomorrow when the new ones come in. if it happens after i replace them then theres a good chance that it is the coils themselves.

That link: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=583 .... contains one bit of misinformation...

When checking the secondary side of the coils, that 15K ohms number should be with the spark plug caps removed; with the caps in place, you're looking for 25K ohms +/- 10%. If you don't get that, remove the caps by unscrewing them from the wires, then check between the wire ends for the 15K. Each cap is 5K ohms, and these should be checked seperately. If a cap is bad, these can be replaced; most metric bike shops will have new NGK caps for about $3-5 each. Sometimes by clipping about 1/4" off the end of the wires and reinstalling the caps that will clear up connection problems and bring everything back into spec.
