I noticed today that i have a high pitch whine under power, and i can only here it when i give it gas and at lower than 40 mph....after that it gets drowned out by the wind and the kerker exhaust....any ideas? maybe the middle drive? i know that i need to replace my middle drive boot, as it has a gaping hole in it....

The whine is probably just the transmission. The straight cut gears make that noise.
It's normal. You'll get used to the noises.
BTW....Get a new boot HEREGreg

They're noisy engine (mechanically). I would worry about it. Many other bikes, more modern ones too, make an even more pronounced transmission whine. I like the sound!XS1100F 1980 European model. Mine makes a sound like a cricket chirping at around 40 mph. I thought it was the speedo cable. Whine or hum??
Over the years my machine has made both. The whine is normal from the gear mesh in the tranny, mostly in 4th gear on mine. Angle cut gears would quiet this but they are much more expensive and also cause thrust bearing issues so, straight cut gears are the norm.
The hum on the other hand can occur with the speedometer cable because the input socket on back of the speedometer needs some lubrication. The hum is caused by the squared portion at end of the cable spinning in the socket at the speedo drive on the front wheel. The cable will break off there but the problem is at the opposite end of the cable.Mike Giroir

@TADracer I think that I am having this problem. As I was riding home from work yesterday, I noticed a whine/hum from the front end. I found that the speedometer was what was humming since the humming would lessen when I grabbed the speedo and stabilized it.
What is the best way to lubricate the speedo and speedo cable?
thanks-Andrew

I found that my speedo cable was on too tight. It had been making a humming/growling noise and my first inclination was to grease the end and tighten the "nut" where the cable goes into the speedo. When that didn't work, I loosened it and it stopped."Galaxy" 1982 XJ1100J, 1983 XV handlebars, new fusebox, homemade SS wind screen and SS muffler heat shields, homemade grab bar extension and luggage rack. Take some Dri-Slide, or lock lube with graphite, and soak inner and out with it.
Reinstall, and you are good to go. It won't act funny in cold weather that way.
The speedo is another story, and you can check past posts for methods of doing that.
