Heck, that seat looks like an expensive bit in itself. Similar seats in the new metric cruiser catalog are $400 to $600. $600 for a runner, I would say you can't go wrong.

      Original tank?

Suspect is that the original gas tank? and is a 4 into 1 original? Any problems with a 4 into 1?

Decent lookin' '79... even has both sidecovers. That's the original style tank, the 4-1 was added. Only hassle with those pipes is you usually loose the centerstand which makes some service work harder, but if the bike was tuned for it they can make a bit more power.

No, the seat is aftermarket. The only question would be is if it's complete aftermarket assembly (pan, foam, cover) or just a foam/cover conversion on the OEM pan. The latter are pretty common as replacement stock covers were hard to find for a while....

              The ad says CS

The seat is aftermarket made by Sattleman. Motorcycle-Superstore.com sells em for $200...

I'd like to get my a$$ on one to see if I like it. The padding in the touring seat on "old man" is getting a little worn down. and I like the higher split from pilot to passenger. Might keep SWMBO from sliding into me every time I let off the gas.

If you get the bike let me know how you like the seat.

I had one of those seats on my bike when I bought it. I hated it, and couldn't replace it fast enough. It's ugly too!

The stock bike should look similar to this:

$600 is probably a very good buy.

Don, I'm quite capable of doing just that, however, that is not my bike. I found that photo somewhere on this forum. I don't know who it belongs to, but it's somebody here.

BTW, I'm in Seattle enjoying your lovely weather!

By bad! figured it was yours. Lol

Ya its just lovely out... Even down here in the Portland area! Just a wet windy mess this week. It's a rough life to be a 2 wheel junky in this part of the country. You either need to ride between rain storms or just understand you only have 3-4 months to ride a year. On the up side it keeps the miles off the bike

This is why I've gotten back into dirt bikes. So I can ride something year round. Helps keep the skills fresh

                          Hi Don,
whether or not you like the Saddleman conversion depends on the size of your arse.
Before I worked out that the only way to coax my wife into riding with me was to install a sidecar, I put a Saddleman conversion on my XS650.
While my wife's girlish stern fit the rear bucket just nice, my fat backside jammed immovably into the front bucket which was fine until I wanted to shift my position and couldn't.
Even if you are slim enough to fit the seat comfortably the one thing it won't let you do is to slide back and forth on it.

I found that seat to be mushy around the rim and rock hard on the bottom. The seat doesn't get any longer, so the Mrs. will still clang her helmet int yours. I sold mine on eBay for enough to get a good Sargent seat. I tried to sell it for $.99, but it went for over 200 times that!

                              Hey Fred,

Ya that would be my concern. While my backside isn't all that large for my build I do like the free movement my current seat gives me. I would fear the other seat in question would restrict my movement. My wife is a small gal in frame but I wouldn't wanna trap her in one spot either. Maybe I'll have a upholstery shop re-pack the old seat in the near future. The cover and frame is still in good shape. My dad was a little larger in the rear than me so he kinda wore the seat funny.
