CLEAN Carbs

I put my ultrasonic cleaner to work this afternoon and it's doing a GREAT job cleaning my carbs up. I even did the diaphrams and they came out soft and like new. I am hoping this cleaning and rebuild will solve my fuel supply issues.

I bough a Eumax 2.8 Liter unit on eBay. The basket is just a tiny bit to small to full submerse a carb so I am doing them top to bottom in 2 cycles. The described basket size should have fit 1 carb body but it doesn't by the tiniest amount. I'm using crystal clean ultrasonic cleaner mixed with distilled water at 70* C for 20 min per cycle.

I just changed the cleaning solution after 2 carb bodies, 4 lids, 4 bowls, misc hardware and 2 slides. This is what the used solution looks like. I wish I had invested in one of these a while ago.

Just curious, at what height did you get your carbs to finally stop leaking at?

Hey Mack, I never managed to get them to stop flowing past the float needles which is why I decided to do a full cleaning and rebuild with the aid of the ultra sonic cleaner.
I also acquired 4 NOS floats, already have 4 NOS needle jets and a full set of NOS jets ... all of them. So I will set them up stock with the float height being as per the manual from the gasket surface without the gasket in place. I will of course also fuel level test them on the bench. At stock float height they should not leak.

What to lube with

OK, so now I have 4 completely clean and DRY carb bodies and parts. Everything is down to the raw metal / plastic. Should I just put them together dry as they are or should I lube the parts with very light oil while reasembling.
In the past when rebuilding carbs after regular cleaning methods I would lube the contact points between the parts with a film of light oil but perhaps it's not necessary.

Float Height

I put some of the plastic floats into 80/81 carbs and started at 22.5 mm. They leaked same place as yours. I kept increasing the height and didn't stop until I hit 24.5 mm but the fuel level was still too high. The bowl levels didn't come down to the desired level until I hit 25mm. The only thing I lube on my carbs is the enrichement circuit slide and the choke lever. I just use lithium grease at the contact points(just a little dab is required).

Hey Mack, When I originally restored my bike i replaced the brass floats with plastic replacement floats from Mikes XS. I set them as per the manual and the bike run well. Those floats however became "affected" by "fuel" They crumbled starting at the corners. The dust and crumbs that came off them may have been what was causing my needle valve blockages. I bough new ones and they were different in shape from what I started with. I then had the same issue as you. I had to raise the floats so high to make them stop the fuel flow at the needles that the fuel height in the bowls was well above the washers of the bowl screws. I fiddle farted around with it for a few days and gave up. It was mid October anyway so I had had enough. I found some NOS brass floats over the winter and grabbed them. If nothing else I should be able to set them up stock and not have to worry about the fuel dissolving them over time.

The plastic

come from tiawan Rob ? I bought a set of those and was very disappointed. Not only were the floats different from each other, the floats were different from side to side of the same float, not to mention the float pin sleeve was missing in two of them. I complained to the supplier about that and an air filter that was 1/4 inch too tall to fit the airbox, but they just thumbed their nose at me. I don't deal with them anymore.

Is there a reason you chose the Eumax brand because I see other units that are a little bigger (3L) for a similar price? I do ultrasonic testing for a living but have no knowledge of the cleaning side of things. So I'm not sure what to look for spec/feature wise in the cleaner.

Nice job! I don't like putting anything together dry. I usually give it a mist with something light like Seafoam deep creep. Just something to keep the humid air out of the places that should stay dry.

I picked up a cheapo ultrasonic cleaner at harbor freight. Unfortunately, it's a tad small for just about any part I've tried to fit in it, but I can move things around and make due. I've had good results with Power Kleen from Princess Auto. Where did you get your cleaning solution from?

Please excuse me asking but the carb body doesn't fit in a 2.8L size cleaner?
I want to purchase 1 anyway and I need to do the carbs so it seems like a no brainer. I could also sue this on other parts as I dabble with tractors too.

First issue was that many suppliers will not ship to Canada so there was a limited number of units to choose from. The other issue was that very few if any of the suppliers show a photo with anything in it, like a ruler, to show scale. I ended up going with this unit based on basket size as compared to tank size combined with price. Tank size is often somewhat larger then basket size and tanks can not be filled to the brim so some care is needed when selecting. This one will hold 1 carb fully submersed but it's a pressed in fit because the basket is tapered and basket size was at the mouth.

I bought my cleaning fluid on e-Bay and it arrived 2 days later at 1/2 the going price for the same product from non e-Bay suppliers.
