If you cannot install the piston BY HAND you have a problem! You will need to remove the new seal and make SURE the grove inside is CLEAN! I've bent a small flat blade screw driver for this, and it works well. When I'm done cleaning the inside bore and piston, I fit the piston FIRST, as Steve said, and then put in the seal, lube the inside with brake fluid and install the piston. You WILL need to have the bleeder valve open, or the brake line off the caliper.
Unlike Steve, I DO sometimes install the brake pads WITHOUT pulling the assembly off the axle. But, I HAVE done the job a few hundred times, and know to look and make sure the pads in in correctly.
