Cracked exhaust

Hi all ,

I've been a lurker here for the past few weeks and just joined today, thanks to admin T.C.

I recently bought my first bike it's an XS1100 1980 , it wasn't in running condition when bought ... but I was able to rebuild/fix the carb ...and glad the engine ran good during test last Sunday.

However my left muffler has a crack that I'm not sure what's the best thing to do with it ...either bring to a shop for welding or buy new exhaust? ( after market maybe) . Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks

If you have a competent welder and the pipes are worth it then fix em if you got em. The supply is very limited for new and the market is hot for used. If they can be saved that is the best option. I have several sets of different exhaust here but you could not pry them from my cold dead hands until the day I am ready to let them go! One can definetly find these pipes but they are very hard to come by!

Thanks for your advice Rasputin , I'll have to find a good welder or maybe go to the Yamaha store I found not too far from my place and ask if maybe they can fix it.

Hasn't some put Harley mufflers on?

Let me guess... it's cracked right where the muffler attaches to the collector. Pretty common, and if you catch it before it breaks completely or eats away the end badly enough that the refit will be hard, not a big deal. Just make sure whoever does it know how to weld. Pull off the chrome heat shield before welding for access, then spray it with some silver paint for rust protection after.

band clamp

Go to an auto parts supplier & get a 1&3/4 inch stainless band clamp if it's at the joint. they're about 2 inches wide & clamp securely on the pipe. Will last longer than the rest of your pipes.Probably be shinier than the muffler.

However, if its actually the muffler, get a pair of used Harley mufflers ,Dyna & Sportster will work, & cut off your old mufflers & put on the HDs. You can even buy softtail mufflers with the crossover if you are concerned about not having one.

Hd mufflers are cheap on ebay.

Hi Steve, as far as I can remember it's about 10" from the tip , I will try to post a picture maybe tmrw and thanks for your suggestion .

That info is out of date, sorry. Upload your pic to Photobucket, then while viewing the thumbnail version of the pic, left-click the 'img' box in the lower right corner. It will 'blink' as 'copied'. Then while posting, where you want to insert the pic, right-click then left click 'paste'. This will put up a link to your pic. If you post more than one pic, make sure you hit 'enter' between each pic.

Mine are great

HD mufflers is one of my top choices.

Mine seem fine, sound great and very little modification, Vance & Hines straight shot slip on's. Bought them for $150 or $200 used.

That's awesome Brad , I saw somebody posted one like this on YouTube , very similar to yours or who knows , it might be you?

Are these slip ONs or you had to weld it?
