It's still a shame considering what it was. I went to get mmo today but everywhere was closed so I'm gonna try that tomorrow. I just need to figure my caliper bracket. Did the 81 midnight special have the linked break system anyone know?

The Plot Thickens!
Hey Dredel,
The VIN#/Serial# thread is in the MISC FORUM, check both your frame number on the steering neck, as well as the engine number on the clutch engine case. They should match, but I'm suspecting they may not?
Your gas tank is a Special, you've got the 81MNS swirly spoked wheels, but they could have been taken off of an XJ or such. The left timing plate cover does NOT have the RING around the YAMAHA name like the 81's have, but it could have been replaced, can't see the other side to compare.
You might have an 80 MNS with 81/82 wheels put on?? You inquired about the linked brakes, does yours have the linked brakes, only 1 caliper for the front hand brake?? It's difficult to tell from the photo if they are connected to a "Y"/junction fitting under the steering section?
