Double check your vin just for giggles and if you can a pic would be handy.

I'll sign up so I can do pictures. I'll snap a pic later and put it up. Yeah I need to do a vin search. I thought xses last year was 1981 but if there's a midnight special in 1982 then that is what mine was. Now it's a mixture.

. Here's a pic of the bike I just signed up for photobucket. I'll take a pic of the breaks tonight and put it up tomorrow.

On photobucket just highlight the pic. There will be a drop down list. click on the bottom one which is IMGcode. Copy that and paste it into your post. The pic will come up.

It's the only picture and it's not a good one. I'll take a picture later of the caliper bracket. It looks like the one off a 79 special.

Hey, your bike isn't as nastily hacked-up as some we've seen, and better looking than some stock ones that have turned up...

Still have the full suspension, so you can go any direction you want!

It's still a shame considering what it was. I went to get mmo today but everywhere was closed so I'm gonna try that tomorrow. I just need to figure my caliper bracket. Did the 81 midnight special have the linked break system anyone know?

Yes it did, same as the XJ.

                                The Plot Thickens!

                                Hey Dredel,

The VIN#/Serial# thread is in the MISC FORUM, check both your frame number on the steering neck, as well as the engine number on the clutch engine case. They should match, but I'm suspecting they may not?

Your gas tank is a Special, you've got the 81MNS swirly spoked wheels, but they could have been taken off of an XJ or such. The left timing plate cover does NOT have the RING around the YAMAHA name like the 81's have, but it could have been replaced, can't see the other side to compare.

You might have an 80 MNS with 81/82 wheels put on?? You inquired about the linked brakes, does yours have the linked brakes, only 1 caliper for the front hand brake?? It's difficult to tell from the photo if they are connected to a "Y"/junction fitting under the steering section?
