Well I don't think you can disagree that it is far more accurate. The human eye is ment to be fooled. Use the bread tie

The bench sync I use was from a field manual for my XS400 which said to use the idle ports and to set both the butterflies to cross the same idle port in the same place together. Adjusting that technique to the 4 XS11 carbs works just as well for our carbs and I feel is a little more accurate than the bread tie method and probably than the light method as well as you're using the measurement of greatest movement rather than least movement.

When I had that problem, it was the throttle cable being clamped incorrectly. I'm 100 miles from my bike at the moment, so bear with me, but I believe there is an indentation on the metal at the carb end of the throttle cable. There is a matching bump on the metal clamp, make sure they meet. Mine was 1/4" further from the carbs than it should have been. I think the choke cable on my XJ is similar, but I don't think my XJ had a cable on the choke.

        YMMV,

So it gets a line hooked to it that starts a little above the gear shift right?

The port on the #2 carb body runs to the vacuum line that goes into behind the left side ignition cover. It is for your vacuum advance. Yes, it is in front and above of the shifter.
