  • wtf is goin on ?????

Ok so my xs sat in peices for a month I put it all back together finally and started it up and bam it started to my suprise but my rpms are at five and they only keep climbing what could be the problem is it a idle adjustment or do the carbs need synced what is the issue and ideas fellas

It is a possibility that a carb is hanging open or the cable is sticking hanging them open or you could have a vacume leak or the choke leaver could be out of place. Those are the things I would look for first as they will be the simple things to resolve. For the idle to be that high you are somehow getting more air in.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

Could be both. Set the idle screw down so it starts at about 1100 rpm. Then get the bike warmed up. With no choke should be at 1100. If it just keeps climbing that is a sign the carbs need syching or you have a vacuum leak.

ok and the idle screw is located on the carbs fuel line side between carbs 2 and 3 right?

Depending on the year and model, yes. The early bikes had the screw head on top of the carbs, and later down low, IIRC.

lefty loosey, righty tighty. You need to back off (loosen) the screw to lower the idle speed. Also make sure the throttle cable is NOT hung up on the carb holder clamps.

                high idle

a climbing high idle when first started is either a lean mixture in the idle circut or a vacuum leak, poss around the carb boots and/or anything within the intake not put together correctly. ill bet if u turn down the idle to get it lowered, once it warms up, it wont idle anymore. keep us updated

I had that problem once. For me, it was a stuck throttle cable. I twisted the grip wide open when it wasn't running, felt the cable get un-stuck, and then it was fine.

                  Good luck!

I agree on the stuck cable, but could also be a idle screw too tight. First I would check your cable and then check your idle screw back it out quite a bit. a bench sync might be a good idea. keep a fan on your engine if you are leaving it idle for long periods of time as well.

Had same problem on my XJ750. It was a hung throttle lever on the carbs. It was hung on the hose clamp screw for the boots.
Good luck. I hope it's that simple.

Bench sync is referring to setting all the butterflies to the same level of openness. This had nothing to do with the idle screws.

Turn your idle mixture screws (on the top of the carb bodies) all the way in and back then out 1 and 1/4 turns to 1 and 1/2 turns to start with.(make sure you set them all the same) If you wanna bench sync, you will have to take the carbs off. You can use a bread tie wire with the plastic/paper taken off of it and loosely tighten the butterflys down to the bread tie wire. This will get your carbs close to "in sync". If you do this your idle screw will be set to this same setting. You can then turn it up or down so you are idling at your desired RPM. 1200-1400 is a pretty good range. If you do take them off, and you haven't cleaned them thoroughly I would suggest that too. Follow the tech tip on cleaning carbs for that. Good luck. ISN'T IT ALL FUN!

The way I bench sych is to open the butterflys a little more than No. 3, turn the idle knob until No. 3 is barely letting light shine under it, and close the others to match. Use a flash light from the inlet side and look through the outlet side. This should get you pretty close for using the gages wen the carbs are reinstalled. I never liked the bread tie thing.
