Slowly crack that throttle open, rev her up nice and high then drop that clutch on green. 80 mph in third in a 40 zone. lol less than a block's distance. made my day.Nathan

Alright, I pulled all the vac and mechanical advance off tonight and it all seemed loose and in good working order. I cleaned it all anyways and lubed it and put it all back on.
I then pulled the valve cover and found the dots to be lined up perfect, but that the cam gears were in 180 out of time. Got them turned around and got one screw in each gear. Got the dots lined up but now I can only rotate the crank about 1/4 turn! WTF!! When I rotate the engine clockwise it is almost like I am hitting the exhaust valve in #3 and if I rotate counter-clockwise it looks like I hit the exhaust valve on #4! I am pretty much positive I didn't move the crank when I had the cam chain off. Didn't move the cams when I had the chain off. So what is going on!
So then I gave up and went back to the sidecovers and getting them ready to clearcoat.

Well, don't know how but something was out of time. So now it is all back in time and spins well. Nothing got bent, compression on the cold engine was 1-4 140, 145, 150, 155. Didn't really have time to go any farther with it today.Nathan

Well I finally decided to lug along the ratchet and socket (as well as a screwdriver and wrench for some slight clutch adjustments) for the throttle chops. I stuck some new plugs in a couple days ago so the plugs had about 80 miles on them. When I pulled the plugs after a 8500-9000 rpm in second gear for about 1/4-1/2 mile the plugs white white. There was a little pink and a little brownish spot on each but they were white.
I think after the clutch adjustments I solved the "not getting up to redline" problem, but it starts climbing slow once I get to about 7500rpm.
Would moving the needle up one be right or go up one on the mains be better?Nathan

As far as I know a plug chop is best done in a higher gear with a load on it such as an uphill climb. My personal experience is that if the engine is not working hard enough you will not see a true reading on the plugs. Second gear at those rpms will not make the bike work hard enough to tell. Fourth gear on a long uphill pull will read differently.
I know I say I do the 5th gear all out on an uphill when I check mine but I have plenty of room to do exactly that. I would suspect that if you were to do the same it would change the plug readings.
That said I like to leave the needle jets alone and do it with main jets unless I can not get a proper read on my plugs. YMMV, as will opinions, but thats my 2 cents.2-79 XS1100 SF

Man Nate, that thing should snap your neck when it hits about 5K and when it does you better be lookin' for another gear.
Are you POSITIVE all the timing components are working properly? Did you mess with the timing adjustment at all?Greg

Moto, how can I be rich? I am at stock jetting!
High gear throttle chop isn't going to happen around here!
Forgot to add in before, there is light pop when I let off at high RPMs and also when I am getting on and off the throttle it pops once right as I get back on it.Last edited by natemoen; 05-09-2012, 04:22 AM.Nathan
