  • Rear axle torque question

It has came across my nose here that the manual print for torque on the rear axle of a Special is wrong. Manual says 76lbs I've seen on here its suppose to be 108lbs. Could some one clarify. and Should I pull my cotter, loosen the pinch bolt, and re-torque mine to 108? I torqued mine to 76lbs the hole and the castle lined up, cotter went thru like it was just meant to be. I could probably ride it for years as is but now that I've seen that it may not be correct its one of those things that will stick in the back of mind.

I lost a rear wheel off my old tow rig with my fully loaded race car trailer behind it on the freeway once. I just had tires put on it a few days before this happened. Now my Anal-self checks the torque on my truck before I take off on a haul with the boat on the back (and the trailer wheels) its alot of lug nuts!

Probably answered my own question.. I'll pull and re-torque tomorrow as soon as I get verification on the number to click it too

hey Don. i just did my 81SH and my manual states 108. i believe the older Yamaha manual spec is a known misprint. the castle nut and hole will fit just means its not REALLY REALLY loose! re-torque

The 108ft.lbs. IS correct for both models as previously stated Don. Heck in a pinch and no torque wrench tight-tight is fine. Just remember to loosen the right side pinch bolt first. That tightening is just for holding the spacer inside wheel tight against the two INNER bearing races keeping them stationary allowing the outer race and rollers to turn.

Ok Fella I remember seeing a factor owners manual for my XS somewhere. I remember when I brought the bike home I put it up as not to lose it. I found it

I think this answers my question. Clymer IS wrong... Cuz Yamaha can't be wrong... right

          Wrong....err....right....err...left....umm.

For the sake of your good nights rest, I would go torque it to 108 before you lay your head on the plllow. Really, I rode alot of miles on both of my SHs before any one ever pointed out the folly in the Clymers manual. In fact, this last time after switching rear tires was the first time I ever put 108 on that nut.I certainly did nto suffer any ilfated catastrophe for my lack of proper torquage. But, I will not put another one on at anything less than 108.

Lmao! ya I've put 140 miles on it since putting it back together. I'll pop the cotter out, loosen the pinch bolt and tighten it up tomorrow. Better safe then sorry... I can't believe the set torque for the pinch bolt is only 4.5lbs... I'm sure I tightened it a lot more than that with my end wrench. Lmao

Hmm...Pinch bolt is 14.5, looks like one more misprint.
