  • Hey Everyone! does this look like a ridiculous mod to bypass the octy unit?!?!

Hey peeps im new to the forum and am seeking some feedback...i just bypassed that stupid octy unit cuz it was leaking, but im not sure if i even came close to doing it right. i fired up the bike when i was done and it started fine. im wondering if anyone could give me any feedback though about this maybe being a dangerous set up for the fuel lines. keep in mind i know that im going to have to zip tie the ends of everything to make it safe, but i couldnt resist hooking everything up first to try it out. Heres a pic...

That looks like it will work. I was just at advance Auto myself, looking for some "Y" connectors to do the same thing, not because my Octy wasn't workng, but because it's such a mess of hoses. I'm not too sure about the "Y" connector though as my parts man brought up a good point, that "Y" connector is for vacuum, not gas. I have one of mine soaking in a jar of gas right now to see if it holds up. I was at Auto Zone and they didn't have any good "Y" connectors, but had some nice brass "T" connectors that would work, just take up a little more space. You should keep an eye on the condition of those plastic "Y" connectors for a while. I did notice they are made in China (of course).

i cant see the pic clear enuff
to see where u have the hoses connected,
but u should be able to block the front outlets of the petcock
and only need to use the rear outlets, this will give u
on and reserve, i prefer to have the hoses joined by a
't' or 'y' piece then connect straight to the carbs with
a cpl of inline fuel filters.

      btw

You don't even need that front petcock port anymore once you remove the octy. It can just be blocked off and a line run from the rear petcock port to the carbs.

I used brass ones from my local Ace Hardware. I expect they should never be an issue. They are a bit heavy.

              Hi Frank and welcome,
well, you are part way there with 2 less hoses. As has been posted, block off the gas taps' front spigots and it's simpler yet.
Just remember that what the octy did in it's insanely complicated way was to automatically turn the gas on and off.
You ain't got that no more.
              Then the ifs kick in.
If you don't remember to turn the gas off when you park and
if the carb float needles leak and
if gas overflows and runs into the engine to dilute the engine oil
You will not be a happy camper.
And while zip ties might work, the little metal spring clips they sell at the place you buy your Tygon gas line work better.

Yo everyone! Thanks for the welcome to the forum! Also...seriously its just as stupid easy as blocking the front nipple on the petcocks and running one line each to the carbs!?! so I essentially dont even need the splitters at all...maybe ill take em off cuz honestly im not so sure about their reliability either. I was concerned about them holding up. What heppened was i was impatient and the only place open last night only had the plastic y splitters. so ill probably replace them with brass ones or just remove em all together. Also...with not splitting the lines, is there no concern about being able to prime the carbs? i guess that would only be a concern if you've had the bike sitting for awhile.

I used plastic on mine and they were on there for several years without a problem. Switched to brass last summer..........just because.

With no diaphams when you turn them to ON it's the same thing as turning it to prime so that is not and issue.(you would just need to remember to turn them off)

                      Hi Frank,
the carbs on modern bikes can't be "tickled" like an old Britbike so "prime" just means that the gas is turned on.
The octy used to turn the gas on once the engine fired up but it's gone now.
You no longer have automatic gas flow and shut-off.
Now the gas flows the moment you turn the taps on and will want to flow until you turn them off again.

I don't have any specials (except for a parts bike) but I think that leakage can occur at the petcock if the holey rubber gasket in the valve is gouged. At least that can be a problem with the standards. I guess you were able to check that with the petcock in the OFF position while you were re-plumbling the fuel lines...

                          Hey Frank,

Everybody else has covered the lines, don't forget the INLINE FUEL FILTERS, will go perfectly where you have the "Y" fittings after you block off the front petcock ports.

What I've noticed is that your POD filters look like the "inexpensive" Emgo brand, and they are notorious for having a prominent mounting lip on the inside that can interfere with the air flow thru the ports, and can cause excessive richness especially at the mid/higher 5K+ rpms, and even prevent the engine from being able to rev much past that point.

SO...if you've noticed any throttle performance issues, you may want to look at the tech tips for the Velocity Stack type mods folks have done to eliminate the air flow problems with the Emgo Pod filters! JAT!

personally, I don't like clear plastic for fuel lines. In the cold, they become stiff (and probably brittle). The connections assume a memory, and flexing doesn't leave room for a good seal. There's a reason they use rubber for fuel lines, and if there's any place where you want to play it safe, it's with gasoline. I know, I'm a 16 veteran firefighter and EMT. Gasoline isn't a fire, it's an explosion that you don't have time to escape from. JMHO.
