  • Never Seen XS New!

Starting to feel like i may be one of the youngest members on this site. Got my bike off clist 2 years ago. It was a pile and the guy that shafted me knew it was. I was lucky to run across this site. After being on here ive started to realize that most of you have owned this bike since it was new. I was 21 when i got my first xsbike so I wasnt even born when this bike was new. I have only heard great things about it. I was able to see Bob Jones Bike shop behind his house and got a copy of XS11 Heaven when i picked up my second 2 parts bikes and a spare motor. And let me tell you that shop was very impressive. You could have eaten off the floor. That was probably when i fell in love with the bike. Never knew that there was that much of a following for this bike but i sure learned fast. lol I was just curious if there were that many members younger than me?

Since I was around but not yet legal to drive in 78, I am guessing that rules me out.

Ok you found me...an original owner of my XJ but I think I'm actually in the minority here...I cant tell you how many times I've read how people here find these bikes for a song. While they got theirs cheap compared to me paying the full price of admission(brand new) they all without exception have to get theirs up to speed..so invariably it will cost them something more in time effort and money. Still it comes out to less than what I've paid iinto this bike over the 29 yrs (to this month) since I brought Max home...

            GEEZE!!!!! I can't even REMEMBER 24.

I remember XSs. I had to be around 19 or 20 when they came out with the 1100. I always wanted a Special since the mid 70s. There were only 650s and 750s then but I wanted one.

Didn't get one until I was 50 but I got me an 1100.

??? I've been accused at times by my wife of being 12 when I get around these bikes?
Try your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.

OK, your going to have to explain that to me Tod. Your wife is 12 when you get around these bikes? Do they throw her back in time or what?

I bought mine new, an '81 in '83 with 17 miles on it from a fellow sailor in Japan, I was ~25 then, so yeah, I'm in the sorta older group...end of the baby boomer crowd so I'm told!

Like BNE/Madmaxim, I paid essentially full retail ~$3200 for it, rode it for 9 years, it died and sat for 10 years, then I rebuilt it putting another ~$2500 into it, have ridden it another 11 years and still going strong...the bike that is!

I had a '74 TX500B I got in '76 and rode it for 6 years, was busy with college and then military service and schools, so wasn't much aware of the XS11 when it came out in '78. I was in Japan with my 500, found a nice XS750 triple off base, rode it for 1.5 years in Japan, and then found the XS11 Special shortly before transferring back home. Had looked at a Harley FLXR or such....Sportster type, but the ~$8k sticker price was a bit beyond my budget, and I was familiar with the Yamaha brand and performance so I took a chance on the 11....had never had a test ride on it, but it was 350cc's bigger than the 750 I had been riding, and the 750 had a considerable amount of power/torque so I thought the 1100 would have a "little bit" more! I was right!!

I was 24 when I got my first XS11 back in '89. Tore the whole motor apart that year to do the 2nd gear fix. Hell of an upgrade from a Suzy GS550.
