yup...........post us the frame model# of the top left side sterring neck, and the model# off the motor found on the right-side top of engine case. Both, as as you say, things have been changed and the motor may or may not match the frame year/model.

      Look here: http://www.xs11.com/faqs/153-serial-...ry-colors.html

Check both the frame and the motor, as there are differences between the models/years...

The motor on my bike is not the original. The original motor had a hole in one of the pistons. So i got a different one and had to change the head on it cuz someone left a loose bolt in the intake and i didnt catch it before i swaped motors. But i should still have the motor i took off ill look and see if the numbers are the same. Will post updates tommorow. Thanks.

As far as identifying the LEGAL model/year, it's all about the frame. The reason to worry about the engine number is for troubleshooting and ordering parts.

For most of the states that is true, however some do look to see all numbers match. So it can be a problem.

Depending how molested the machine is, everything from bars to rear fender could be a swap from a diff year or model. Seen some XS11s that spans it all, in some ways my current one does.

BTW, that frame date WILL be the manufacturing date, and actual model year will be the year after......

Not always the year after, some bikes are actually made in the same year as their model year, at least those at the end of the model run are. This is why you can't go by year of manufacture for model, you have to use the VIN which is a SURE tell, as is the emmisions sticker as it tells what year emmisions the bike was manufactured for.

Not necessarily match, only that they match the title, as those states also carry both the frame number and the engine number on the title, as those CAN be different. Some bikes come into Ca without engine serial numbers, in which case the CHP assigns numbers which are permanently affixt to the engine and frame as needed.

                    Hi GT,
it's not a Special now, no. But just about everything can be swapped between Standards & Specials and there's lots of Frankenbikes around.
The frame number will tell you what it was originally.

In Cali that may be, but I think Steve has stated that Washington wants numbers to match so they know it was not a stolen engine and such.

Thankfully, Washington doesn't care too much about matching numbers any more; at one time it was a big deal, and can still be one if you're bringing in a vehicle from out of state with a 'other' title ('salvage', repairable', etc) or are re-titling a 'insurance total'. But if it's a 'normal' clear title, nobody looks.

But some states do check, so you need to know your local laws to avoid a nasty surprise...

OK, the chart sez that frame ID makes the bike an '80 Standard.
