Best results would be to use a moly60 type grease...this is whats used on my ST1100 and it stays on the splines...but I dont believe you need to remove the final drive to grease the splines...they are right there once you remove the wheel.

I use the black Moly Extreme pressure grease in everything. I've got a tube of it in the grease gun and a can of bearing packing grease. The only thing better is the Lucas Red and Tacky grease. but it can be hard to find. We've been using the black grease for as long as I can remember in our 4x4 and racing applications for u-joints, ball joints, and bearings. I also use it in the bearing buddies on my boat trailer. I has a long life span and does not wash out easily. my .02

You can get black moly grease @ any auto parts store. I was very liberal with my final drive greasing. Not sure if there's a specific amount your suppose to use. I did mine like I was packing a slip shaft on a tractor attachment. Cleaned and Packed the female side of the connection with grease, cleaned the male side and shoved em back together.

                grease

thanx Don. this Honda Moly 60 is like a paste. i didnt buy it yet, but ill need to buy something. is the black moly like a grease. Guys using the paste say u paint it on, which means its not packed. i recently saw a new member here who is rebuilding a bike he just got and had the driveline apart with pix of the driveshaft spline packed with grease, but i cant seem to find him.

                  it was probably mine

The black moly in a can is paste like. Like wheel bearing grease. they also make it in a liquid tube for grease gun. I buy it @ autozone the brand name is Coastal. Staylube makes it too. So any NAPA, Autozone, O'Rileys will have it

                      moly 60

so, Moly 60 is all u need to use? no packing any other grease in there. im gettin confused by other forums ive been reading. someone said it doesnt provide ALL the lubrication needed. im not sure i want to leave it dry. i called around to AutoZone, O'Reillys nobody has Coastal Black Moly if thats the complete name i should just use what Yamaha specs, NLG1-2, of course it doesnt state what the percentage is of moly disulfide is in it. i just want it to be lubed correctly. im lost!!!!!!!!!!!!i need a straight answer on what has been used and how much. hopefully ill have answers for members when they need help and ive done it right

I just use any type of axle bearing grease, usually marine grade, and slather it in there every other rear tire change (15K) and have never had any problems. You really don't need to overfill it. The picture above is way more than I would use. YMMV

allright, thanx Phil. i guess the NGL1-2 is sufficient then. everybody does thier own thng, i just need to get there haha i still dont know how a pea sized amount of Moly 60 protects what took 1-2 Tbls of regular grease. hopefully it will make better sense after i have it apart. then ill buy whatever i think makes the most sense.

It only looks like a lot... I didn't stuff it full what you see is just surface. I didn't put
any grease on the other side (male side). The theory is that it will push most of it down the splines when connected. We greased slip shafts on farm implements this way for generations with great success. May not be the way everyone else does it but it hasn't fail me yet in any situation. Any extreme pressure moy grease will be black. Sorry I couldn't help you further. Sounds like your getting it figured out thou.

You have to be careful here. The standard "moly grease" sold at auto parts stores have a few percent molybdenum added to standard grease and it does help quite a bit. But the "moly grease" specified for the splines is much, much, MUCH higher concentration of molybdenum, like in the range of 60% or higher. Needless to say, the low % stuff is NOT the same as the high % stuff!

Having said that, there probably are some auto parts stores that actually HAVE high moly grease (usually in a tub or tube), I just haven't ever seen one and in fact had to order the correct grease when I went through the final drive on my XS.
