    Try grounding the neutral indicator light wire, the one down by the shifter under the engine. This temporarily fixes the unexplaned loss of two cylinders whenever that lower harness down there gets full of water, either from washing or riding the bike. Couldn't hurt to try, btw the the neutral light will stay on in all gears.

    Another thing to check if you haven't is the plastic PU coil wire harness connector behind the fuse panel. it often gets overlooked and needs cleaning.
    Good call Phil but should it be grounded or just disconnected? The switch will usually PROVIDE a ground between a pickup wire causing a dead coil. From my experince anyway.

      Greg, now that I think about it, his bike would probably be in neutral when cranking and that wire would be grounded anyway. It's when dropped into gear that the ground disconects losing two cyls in the rain, my bad.

        Thanks everyone I appreciate all of the tips. What is meant by manually operating the advance? Do you mean just rocking it back and forth by hand? Also, what should my readings be at the box?

          The ballast resistor can't go half bad, making only half the system not work. It would either make both coils not work or let both work, not make one not work and leave the other working as is described by the OP.

            Exactly. and don't be gentle . Do it slow and fast and in between slow and fast.720 ohms +/- 20%, with age allow 1 or 2 percent more.The main thing is no blip(loss of reading) . I fixed (I thought ) a couple times. Bit Me.

            You know a member offers a service manual D/L , right.?
