Greg, now that I think about it, his bike would probably be in neutral when cranking and that wire would be grounded anyway. It's when dropped into gear that the ground disconects losing two cyls in the rain, my bad.2H7 (79) owned since '89

Thanks everyone I appreciate all of the tips. What is meant by manually operating the advance? Do you mean just rocking it back and forth by hand? Also, what should my readings be at the box?

The ballast resistor can't go half bad, making only half the system not work. It would either make both coils not work or let both work, not make one not work and leave the other working as is described by the OP.Cy
