According to Yamaha parts fiche, the 80 and 81 Special speedometers have the same part number 5H1-83570-A0-00 so I would have to say yes they will interchange. Did you try lubricating the speedometer cable?2H7 (79) owned since '89

Yep, can't hurt lubing the cable first to see if that's the problem. Might want to also spray a shot of silicone up in the cable attachment point in the speedometer.2H7 (79) owned since '89

any speedo from any XS series bike will work and read right although the square ones won't look right and the US ones will need mental arithmetic to get the numbers sorted into the KPH we Canadians are used to.Fred Hill, S'toon

Actually Fred I have a 140MPH speedometer from an XS750 and it shows BOTH MPH and KPH. IIRCGreg

Almost all cars and bikes that I have owned made after about 1980 will have the speed in both MPH and KPH. Initially they were trying to ween us onto the metric system. Today my impression is they just know we tend to travel to Canada and need both, actually I think is just so they can use one component in both areas.
When I was in college my physics professor was teaching accelleration and such and he advised us that when the LEO pulls you over and tells you you were exceeding the then 55 MPH speed limit, to just look at him and say "No officer, I was going 88!!. KPH of course, which equates to roughly 55 MPH. And that, is as close as I get to knowing metric off the top of my head!.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

All the gauges in my truck @ work are standard or imperial depends who you talk to like my speedo read in mph and odometer is is miles, my temp in in F and all my pressure gauges in is psi. Which is kind of funny because my truck is built in ontario but it was originally sold in the tristate area, and just as a side note to all of this ramabling, we use pounds in most of our shipping bills.'79 XS11SF
