Actually Fred I have a 140MPH speedometer from an XS750 and it shows BOTH MPH and KPH. IIRC

Yeah, a US speedo will have big white MPH numbers and tiny orange KPH numbers with the odometer reading only in miles.
A metric speedo will have big white KPH numbers and tiny orange MPH numbers with the odometer reading in only kilometers.
The mental arithmetic is because you daren't peer at the tiny orange numbers for long enough to read them and in working out how far you've got to go in miles before you run out of gas at 160 kilometers.
