  • 77 LH Control to my 79???

Okay...need to replace the left hand control cause the high/low beam switch handle is broken.

I've found one from a 77 xs750. Will it fit on my '79 xs11 special. Seems reasonable, but a good fit maters! Thanks!

    Connectors?

If it has the same connectors it'll probably work. But, if not, it'd be easier to just get the right one off Ebay. 78-79s all the same.

The 650's hand controls work, but have different connectors but that is an easy swap. Not sure about the 750's though.

If you want new Mikes XS has THESE. You'll have to put your plug for the 1100 on it but it's the same otherwise.

            Hazard sw?

My current LH control doesn't have the hazard switch. If i get a control with the hazard switch, may I wire it in?

I read another post related...but I'm not sure what applies here.

Sounds like picking up the 79 1100 model is most wise. Though I am comfortable swapping out the connectors...

It would require some complicated wiring to wire in the hazzard flasher. That or a wiring harness from an 80 or 81 special.

Greg, it's actually not that complicated. The handlebar switch takes care of all the lights, all you need to add is a fused powered wire to the needed 4-way flasher, then a wire from the flasher to the otherwise-extra wire on the handlebar switch. The powered wire should be ahead of the ignition switch so you don't need to leave the key behind. There'll be some monkey-motion making it look decent and doing a nice job of making the connections, but that's it...

Except he is working with a 79. There won't be an extra wire.

I'll also note that one effect that would only apply to the '79 Special with it's single indicator light is the indicator won't flash with the hazards with the stock wiring; to get it to do so, you'd have to do the diode mod to the light.

                        Hi Eric,
up to the 1980 switch with the 4-way on it, the XS650/750/850/1100
have the same switch, same as the one from MikesXS.
That is, the look and the innards are the same. The wiring colours and their placement in the multi-plug may be different but that's an easy fix.

                          Need to add a flasher?

                          Thanks Crazy...

Can you clarify "the needed 4-way flasher"? Do I need to pick up a flasher unit for the 4 ways? Then, I presume...wire from unswitched 12v...to flasher...to extra wire on the harness of my later style switch. The newer one has 5 wires on its second plug where the original has 4 (as expected).

Any recommends on the plugs? I could hunt for a matching female plug to match the new part...or just pick up a generic 6 way (5 would do) plug pair. The generic option seems easier...but maybe that female plug is easier to get than I realize.

On a side note, I'll need to clean up the hazard switch...it's stuck at 'off' until I get a sec to pull it apart and clean it out.

Thoughts? Finally feels like spring here in MN!

                          -Eric

You only need to add the 4-way flasher if you want to have hazard lights. The '78-79 bikes didn't have them (and lack the mount on the frame for it), so if you want to add them, get a 4-lamp flasher and follow the wiring directions you have and hang the flasher someplace.

If you don't want to bother, then don't do anything. Just leave the 4-way switch in the 'off' position and everything else will work normally.

                              Flashers... !

Makes good sense. But I'd not need an additional set of lights for the 4 ways, correct? Just a place to mount the flasher itself?

Or will the added flasher (circuit to pulse the 12v) control the existing lights?

And...about to mount the Vetter Windjammer IV up front. Say...any guess what size the threaded holes in the frame are for the fairing mount?
