XJ1100 did my second clean on the carbs I did not do a good job in the bowls on the starter feeds first round but now it starts great and runs well but when I go for a run anything over 3000rpm it bogs right down I replaced the pilot jets cleaned the mains set the floats replaced the needle valves and seats. It revs fine in neutral I just can't get it above 3000 on the ride I only cleaned the emulsion tubes in place I was not sure how to get out Can I replace them? Could the emulsions be causing the problem? I have been out of biking for 30 plus This awesome bike sat for 12 years It is in really good condition I just want to get this right I am just frustrated Thanks

+1
+1 on CS, just pull them (emulsion tubes) and clean the crap out of them Also, check and re-check ALL float hights Running out of fuel is most often a float hight thing, or a clogged gas cap vent thing or a pinched fuel line thing, you get the idea Make SURE nothing is slowing down the fuel flow
Originally posted by crazy steve View PostIf the carbs had any gum/crud in them, there's almost no doubt the emulsion tubes need cleaning too and that could be the problem. There's no need to replace them either unless they're damaged. To remove, pull the carbs, remove the bowls, main jets, and slide/diaphrams, then push the tubes into the slide hole until they drop out. Make sure you clean the holes out, and there's some small passages in there too. You can't get these carbs too clean....1979 XS1100 Special (Mad Max, OEM) Current

If it helps for directions, the main jet is what holds the emusion tubes in place. If they don't fall out easily, use a small wooden dowel and tap on the opening where the main jet screws into. That should knock the emulsion tubes lose. OFC, as Steve mentioned, the diaphragms need to be removed first, as that is where they will come out. Be careful when re-installing them, as there is a locating pin on the inside of the carb, and the groove on the side of the emulsion tube slides over that pin.1980 XS850SG - Sold

My emulsion tubes were the cause of a lot of my carb problems so I removed them to clean them and 2 of them broke as got them out. I used a wooden dowel and carefully removed them but when I had them almost out and pulled on them with my fingers they just broke apart with hardly any pressure on them. The replacements I got (used) weren't brittle like mine were so yours may not be that bad.1979 Special with 1980 motor and 1979 carbs

Thanks to all
The information posted youall shared is great. I did not understand how they came out I am really new to all of this. I am confident I can do this. The service manual was very non descriptive and anything I googled had shown screwed in tubes I had no idea I was at a loss and cleaned as best I could. If they are anything like the others they are bad everything was clogged from a 12 year sit. I had to "easy out" the pilots to replace. I will start on the tear down toinght and let you know I can't thank you enough for pointing me in this direction I will post with the results as soon as I am back together82 XJ1100J

Yikes what a mess Half way through
Its 2pm on the east coast I am half way through the emulsion tubes. So far the large opening near the area you thread in the main jet is full on all 4 tubes with soft gunk. In 2 the the small holes are non exsisting totally clogged the others had some blockage. In for the soak and clean now I will keep you informed Thank you to everyone for the help with this so far so good.82 XJ1100J

I don't know if you ahve been warned about this before but be careful about soaking the carbs. If you use a carb dip it can ruin the rubber seals on the butterfly shafts.RIP Whiskers (Shop Boss) 25+yrs

Round 3 complete
Round 3 is in the books. I am down to under an hour on the install of the carbs It would have been a lot quicker if I had not mixed up the choke and throttle cables not to bright there seinor moment and my eyesite is not what it was. I still have a lot to learn and a lot to do. Upon the turn of the petcock fuel started to leak out the air box but a quick tap set the floats Whew. It fired right up and the throttle seems very responsive. I am anxious to get out on the road and try this we have ice and snow now so a hold on that for a day or 2. I hope this solves the problem Thank you to all with your help through this. l hope to report back with good news soon.
