    Oil Filter Bolt

Many techniques have been discussed on here...hint, hint, search "remove filter bolt".

If access to welder, weld large hex nut onto end of bolt.
    Gator Grip socket.

Flat file to reflatten edges a bit, then get a slightly smaller 6 point socket to hammer onto end of bolt.

Apply Penetrating oil, also torch or safer heat gun application for a few cycles of heat/cool down to help break corrosion/adhesion.

File flat or dremel cut/flat 2 opposing surfaces of bolt so be able to better afix aforementioned vicegrips....or pipe wrench, or crescent wrench.

Buy new bolt from local dealer, www.partsnmore.com, etc., and then just Dremel cut the head off of bolt..had large washer head, then slide filter cup down off bolt, then you can grap remaining bolt to loosen remove from engine, then put in/on new bolt!

      good purchase

It's funny I bought a messed up special and have spent the time making it look kinda like what you just bought. It looks to me that you turned up an excellent motor cycle and it will be rewarding to have all the great help you can get from the knowledgeable guys that are here online. Enjoy the project I think it'll look awesome in the original color in the picture

Another way to remove the oil filter bolt is to use a cold chisel of the correct size and try to spin the bolt/washer CCW to break it loose.

          Ba80

+1 on BA80's recomend on bike oil, not starting an oil thread, just saying, I used car oil in one of my bikes, clutch didnt slip before, slipped badly after the XS1100 clutch is tough, so use the right oil, adjust (at the clutch, then at the handlebar), and could still be fine, if not, new springs should fix it Now, the bolt on the oil filter, it is trashed, so BikerPhill's idea of chisel and brake it loose should work, even if you have to trash the filter case, you can get one on Ebay cheap

The bolt I could not get off was the oil filter bolt. It's rounded from being stripped from the previous owner and vice grips just continued to strip it. Any ideas?

Also, looks like I have a newer aftermarket fuze box.

Up next, clutch adjustment and LED turn signals.

Since I went to the Yamaha shop for the oil filter, I purchased Yamalube oil and gear oil from them as well. I assume there's no problem running these? I probably won't use them long term.

I use YAMALUBE. How can you go wrong there? I use WIX filters because I believe they're better than OEM. Last time I stocked up, I sourced them from NAPA. Yamaha filters are fine.

Hi there, nice to have you aboard! Nice looking bike too. You just found a real gem of a bike, there's others out there but CC for HP & CC for $, you just found one of the Holy Grails we all have here. Niiice!

As to the Oil filter Bolt, you were given some great ideas how to remove it. Mine came off pretty easily but I also have an XJ650 Maxim which had the kind of bolt & bolt head you have and I went nuts figuring how to get it off. Rather than tell you what I tried & didn't work or what might have worked but I was afraid of damaging something, I did the following...

I went to the Hardware store & bought the smallest pipe wrench they had. I also bought a thick walled pipe that barely let the handle of that wrench in it & used it as a breaker bar. I had to really manouver myself around to get the proper purchase/leverage on it but I did and it came off as the tighter & harder I pushed in rotation, the harder it bit into that round bolt head. I did have to touch it up to make the mess not bevelled, with a dremel tool ( a file would have been fine ) before wrenching because the prior owner ( PO ) had made it look like Devil's Tower, thick at the bottom & narrow at the top so the wrench wouldn't fit on it cleanly. I then found someone here who was able to sell me a used good bolt and I have been using that.

When you get the oil filter off be sure to save the washer plate that fits between the spring and the filter. Here's a good site to find the different parts on your bike, there are others & some with better drawings but this will do for now: http://tinyurl.com/p4vox Just proceed to the parts catalog, enter your kind of vehicle ( motorcycle) the year, then the model and then in this case click on "Oil cleaner". You'll see the blow-up description, OEM parts numbers & so on. It'll help you know what you are really looking for.

Enjoy the people here, there's a lot of help if you ever need it.

                  Cheers!

Thanks for all the advice so far. Got the clutch adjusted properly this evening, no more clutch slipping! She's running really good, and after I get my turn signals sorted, I may just leave it alone for awhile.

It does do one really odd thing. If I stall out at a light, and I sometimes do still, it won't crank right back up. It seems like this only happens when it's good and warmed up. Then, if I let it sit for a few minutes, it cranks right back up? It actually behaves like the battery is dead. Dim lights, slow to turn over, etc. I thought I could reproduce the problem just by cutting the engine off and trying to fire i right back up, but it always starts fine. So it's only when I bog down and stall off the line.

                      Battery

These bikes run off the battery and the charging system doesn't really kick in until you reach a mid tach rpm. Check your regulator/rectifier output and battery. Could be weak or you may be doing too much city driving to really charge up the battery. Geezer has a regulater upgrade that starts to kick in at 1500 rpm. Fits perfectly

That makes perfect sense since I've been keeping the revs down due to the clutch.

The electronic flasher and LED's are now in, it's nice having working turn signals.

One of my friends is offering me some barely used black Rizoma Sportline grips. Any reason these won't work on my bike? The standard bar is 7/8", correct?

for the $56 price tag I wouldn't put them on my bike, I'd put them on a pedestal and worship them.

No way would I drop $56 on grips, I'm cheap. These are sitting in a box in his house from a bike he wrecked, and they'll be $0.
