  • Alright John, we want a status update.
Last I heard, you've change the oil again, figured out the bleeding of the brakes and you are trying to wire up a headlight hi/low beam switch.
Now you've got plates, are you ready to ride?
How about time for a carb sync?
I'm off Wed. (of course 4th of July) (and Tues afternoon works too)(Heck, anytime I'm not working will do, except Wed night)

so i looked at my odometer today and saw that i have ridden over 500 miles since i got her on the road. it is a damn good riding bike with alot of acceleration. Gloweva (george) came over and got a chance to ride the beast. it can be a little scary on the interstate around here, but it is a great riding bike. i know i have said it before but i just want to thank everyone that has helped me with my project. you guys kept me going on the project. thanks again. i am going to start getting more into the cosmetic portion of the build now (wrap the headders, paint the engine, and a new panit job to include some sort of design on the tank and fenders, possibly and bigger seat). i will post more pics as it goes into the final stages to really make the bike look the way i want.

        • John, It's been a pleasure to help you with your bike.
As you know, one can get discouraged/distracted/bored working on your own bike and it ends up sitting for a while until you get the drive/excitement/ideas,etc to get back to it.
When another comes by to help (or offers advice over this forum) then we get going again on our project.

My SG is soo close to being road worthy..... Just need a few $ for some tires and a battery.

We 4 hampton roads XS11s need to get together for a group ride.
Someone here posted that 2 bikers is a ride and more than that is a rally.
Maybe we could call it a rally?

              Hi Nightengale,
most hardtail projects end up being parted out on Craigslist so Kudos on the completion.
So how many miles per chiropractic treatment are you getting?

              • Now Fred, He did complete it and rides it. And the seat has suspension, not frame mounted, so it should absorb some of the bumps and bounces.

                  Hi Don,
and did I not give him kudos for doing that?
OK, now I'm an old fart but when I was a young buck I rode old rigid frame bikes because I couldn't afford a modern bike that had rear suspension.
That's why I KNOW that riding a rigid is damaging Nightengale's spinal column.
                  Even on modern smooth roads.
Even with little springs under the seat.
That's why I mock and pick at those who lessen a suspended bike's rideability with a rigid conversion for style's sake.

                  • Yes Fred you did congratulate him on the completion, just before you admonished him for what he built. While I am a decade or two to young to have ridden a hard tail for lack of options, I do also know that there is nothing good that comes from giving your body that kind of beating. I would find a way to mount the fender from the wheel if you want a low riding bike rather than hard tailing it. But that is just my thoughts.

                    • Looks good looks solid and you got what you wanted out of the build. I am not a fan of that design because of many reasons all mentiond by others already.I do congratulate you on being to a ridding point. I would suggest you go on a long ride maybe some ruffer roads to see how it does.
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

                          Hi Don,
gotta tell you about my first swingarm bike.
Bought me a basket case 1938 MOV Velocette in 1955 that someone had abandoned half way into a swingarm conversion.
Relocated the swingarm plates so the swingarm didn't interpenetrate the gearbox.
Scrounged a BSA front fender for a rear fender.
Installed it backwards so it's telefork indents lined up with the rear shocks and the nasty crumple on the front was hidden behind the gearbox.
Bought a 1946 Velocette/Dowty pneumodraulic front fork & wheel from Charlie Hooper. (and you thought air over hydraulic inverted teleforks were modern?)
But the 7" sls drum brakes were NOT modern, oh no.
So you can see that I look at bike modifiers with a BTDT attitude.
What I find ironic is the parts that I added to what could have been a priceless antique by now if I'd let it alone instead of making it ride better are the same parts that guys these days are sawing off their nice comfy modern bikes for style's sake to make them ride worse.

                          • As I enter the realm of those with more years behind them than there are in front of them, I often find that the wheel of evolution is just that, a big ole wheel. It takes longer to make its way round for some items than others, but none the less, eventually, round she comes.

My bikes are always influenced by what others have done.
If you can put your photos back on the site it would be appreciated.

I did not come into the thread until after your photos were deleted.
The battery box photos would be of great interest.

Congrats and glad you could make one for the road. Looks good.

i still have all the pics in photobucket but moved them to their own album and am not sure how to put them back into place. if anyone out there could show me how i would put the pics back up, i know it alot easier with pics. and for all the other comments the bike rides alot smoother than it looks i rode it more than three thousand miles this past summer, and i have taken it on a few long rides. i am also working a bike for a friend of mine its a 1976 kz900 that he wants to make it like mine so i couldnt resist. thanks again for everyones help.
