I rounded up a pair of side covers and want to slick them, ie remove the emblems. The originals are perfect and will go in storage so I can go back to the stock look later. Question is what to use to fill the holes, any suggestions?

Super glue and baking soda... seriously. This sticks really well to the plastic, and can be sanded/painted. Put a piece of tape over the holes from the outside, squirt some glue in the hole, then dust some baking soda over the glue. It'll take multiple applications to build up enough thickness, but it sets up almost instantly so won't take much time at all. You might have to dust a bit on from the outside after removing the tape, then sand it flat.
Works great....Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Super Glue
Permatex makes a few varieties of super glue and some hardware stores can hook you up. What you want is "gap filling" super glue. The Permatex brand will be labeled as such. You can apply it as Steve suggested.
If you use Bondo or other such body filler be sure to cover it with paint on both sides. It shouldn't be left exposed to the air.Marty (in Mississippi)

I have a couple cracked side covers and some with the holding tabs busted, I'm going to try this stuff called qwik putty, you can get it from harbor freight, mold it, press it in place , dries hard, sandable and paintable, permanent. Oh yeah....cheap81 XS1100H

I have repaired lock tabs, cracks, and even a hole that used to be there for a lighter in my side covers with the super glue and baking soda trick. It is fast easy cheap and great. You can even take the part to the bench grinder and use that to shape it after, that is how tough the stuff is. Why mess with success2-79 XS1100 SF

For small holes, if I didn't already have the putty, I might go that route, but with larger holes, cracks or missing pieces, its just easier to roll out some, pack it in place and wait to cure, less mess and ingredients. but thats definitely a easy fix, especially if you have the glue on hand, don't have to go to the store.81 XS1100H

The other thing is that if the putty works good then it is another weapon in our arsenal against tossing valuable parts. Go for it and let us know how well it turns out. Maybe take a few pics if you can, cause we all love to see how stuff works.2-79 XS1100 SF

Thats a good idea, I'm bumming out thanks to the snow, but I can do some of that if not all the repair in the house without SWMBO getting too upset. I'll take a lot of befores (these are almost throw aways) and see if I can resurect them.
Hope you don't mind, I'm going to repair the GS1100's first as they are in worst shape. The Specials' have broken tabs, so I'll do a different follow up, write up on them. Plus I'm at a holt on my carb re-assembly as I have to deal with the diaphram pinholes and lost a crush washer that goes to the drain plug on the bowl on one.Last edited by old_skool; 01-15-2012, 11:53 AM.81 XS1100H

Sounds silly but I just put a couple of short, stainless, Allen head bolts into the holes. You'd be surprised how many times someone will ask me what I've done to "trick out" my side covers. I kind of like the looks as well.
