Ok, I needed a new battery, didn't have or want to spent anouther 100 bucks for a super man battery, so I bought the Walmart special for 48 bucks. I slow charged it and did exactly as the booklet said. When i put it in I had just done some carb work and stuff, so I cranked it alot to get it going and sync'ed. Once all up and running right i put it on a the trickel and brought it back to full charge. Now, a month or so later, it cranks and starts right up, but when I stop at a light sometimes the turn lights stop blinking less i rev the motor and it will pop some and start off sputtering, then smoth right out when the rpm's get up, and the tac jumps around now at low rpm Sond like a new battery to replace my new battery I had also replaced the hearligh bulb with a 60-55w rating on the box, but was told the same as the 55-60w OEM buld Any other thoughts

Easy......take the seat off put a volt meter on battery at idle, see what you got. If ALL primary circuit connection are KNOWN good, should be a a few tenths above 12V.............run it up to a steady 2500rpm.........should be in the neighborhood of 14.5V.Last edited by motoman; 01-11-2012, 11:18 PM.81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

Sounds like you've got some bad connections. I wouldn't blame the battery. Check all the electrical connections, especially the grounds. Disconnect them, clean the corrosion off (even the stuff you can't see) and treat them with dielectric grease. The main frame/engine grounds can be treated with anti-sieze instead, since it helps with conductivity, and there are no other connections nearby to worry about.1980 XS850SG - Sold

Cool
I will clean them all JIC, I still have the OEM fuse box, so, goina replace that as well before I buy anouther battery, the volts at the batt looked fine so I was looking for someting that is causing the strange running, dot know if the 60-55w headlight could be part of the prob, but I only run on dim, so I don't think so Gremlins

TopCat! Geezer sells one too.
I had the same problem with mine (blinkers would stop blinking at idle), and replacing the fuse box fixed it 100%. Easily the best mod I ever made.XS11SH :: K&N Pods, 4->1, Dynojet kit, Barnett clutch springs, TC's fuse block, ATGATT

6 fuse holder
I have seen most of these have 6 fuses and also that most guys leave the glass fuse thats outside the OEM box alone Any reason not to hook it up inside the new box?1979 XS1100 Special (Mad Max, OEM) Current

The blinker might just be your idling to low, same with the sputter. You should have your Idle set between 11 and 13 hundred to get stuff to work right.
Mine is set at about 1200 and works great.
Of course I DID have an off idle sputter when I had used aftermarket carb kits too. The pilot jets were jacked and caused a sputter on accelleration.Greg

other than your hi watt head light are you running any other electronics? There's always been battery issues with mine... if i keep it on the battery tender I can get a few years out of one... Dad seemed to have to buy a new one every spring cuz he would just roll it in the shed when the rain set in and not touch it till about march.
After installing now my 3rd battery in 8 years I've figured out the problem... The spliter on the CB to adapt it to controls on the mic is wire hot all the time. so when in the off position the power led stays on. Now this doesnt sound like much. But remember we're dealing with a battery with a lead plate 1/4 the size of your standard car battery. Even after sitting on the tender my blinkers don't like to work while idling untill I've riden it for a few miles... GREMLINS
Now did you have this problem before you bought the new battery? or is this a new gremlin
I usually dont want to jump to the conclusion that maybe theres a crack in a cell or plate in the battery... but puppies die new all the timeDon

Ba80-Idle is set at 1100 and holds steady there, the carbs has stock jets (put them back in last rebuild 2mo ago with full rebuild of carbs)
Dragon- No acc. on the bike, OEM all the way except the headlight bulb, batt volts check in spec at idle and at 2500 rpm
I am going to replace the OEM fuse box, clean all grounds and connections and check water level again, charge completly again and give it a try1979 XS1100 Special (Mad Max, OEM) Current

OEM, make sure your charging system is up to snuff. At least 14V at the battery at 4K rpm. The Wal-Fart batteries are fine, only if you use them every day or so, they don't like to sit, AGM type doesn't mind as much.2H7 (79) owned since '89
