Ok, carbs ready, now for the bike herself....
put it in first and tried to turn the rear wheel
nothing....how to tell if the engine will/is moving? or is there another way? put a little marvel in each plug hole, maybe a spoon full or so. Add more, or what should we try?

Ok, stupid question first. Is the bike in neutral?? If it is not in neutral you will have a very hard time turning the wheel with the engine engaged, and it will be pretty tough to turn the engine over by pushing the bike with the engine engaged form a dead stop.

I would make sure the trans is in neutral, remove the timing cover from the engine, and use either a cresent wrench on the timing plate or an allen head socket in the timing plate bolt to turn the engine over, recall this one turns clockwise from that side, reverse from alot of bike engines.

I'm assuming the starter isn't working for some reason. No good battery?

A 79 has a kick start option on the engine. Do you have the kick starter?

My 79 has a kick start option... what a bear that is to try! it was about as much fun as trying the pull starter on an old 6 cylinder 2stroke Merc outboard.

plugs out, timing cover off (on left side of motor) big wrench on timing plate, rotate clockwise. You can use a good amount of Mistery Oil or Sea Foam and not hurt anything if plugs are out. might make a mess thou... my .02

Hmmm, My SG has a 79 engine and that kick start has saved me a long walk before.

IMHO these 1100s are a lot easier to kick start than some of the old Harleys I've kicked....................and had them kick back.

I've never had any luck trying to kick mine and get it started... mine don't like to idle if the battery is dead. Probably due to WAY too many electronics taxing the charging system. I carry the kick starter in the trunk on trips for just in case purposes... but I would assume its designed to start it. Just my experience.

I had a battery go south on me last spring. Damn thing started just fine at the house.

Rode it to the store and when I came out the battery wouldn't spin the engine over even once so I pulled the kicker out of the saddle bags and stuck it on. Kicked that thing ONE time and it started right up.

When I got home I checked the battery. It showed 12+ volts but measured only about 20 CCA. I rode it like that for a day or two until I could get over and purchase a new battery.

This engine was suprisingly easy to kick over.

I could be wrong but if the TCI doesnt have enough volts you still wont be able to kick start it.

Why carry the kick lever in saddle bags, why not just put it where it belongs and leave it there? Then you can't ever forget it, you just forget it is even there.

Because it's the stock XS kicker and it doesn't fold back. Besides, it's not something I use a lot and it just lays in the bottom of that right bag and doesn't take up any room. I don't forget about it.

Nate, if he's got an early motor in a later frame, the frame lacks the bracketry to store the kicker... no place to put it...

Another one of those little differences....
