Hi Dragon, It's not a tough fix to do you self. The toughest part is getting to the gears. The step by step on here can help you do it with just some help getting the bike fliped and a dremel (some don't even flip the bike). You don't have to get it perfect, just back cut the dogs and you are all set

Ya with a full dressed bike I think flipping is out of the question I dont feel like taking the whole bike apart to put it on its back. I read the how to section... sounds like a pain in the a$$. I'm just gonna assume its the dogs. When i pin it in 2nd it skips about 6k. some time @ lower rpm depending on load, hill, how it feels that day. i may tackle it myself. Lord knows it ain't fixing itself!

You either gotta flip it, do it from under the bike, or do as one member did and lift the bike by the front of the frame so it's hanging vertically. In any case, with a full dresser unless your going to crawl under it, your pretty much going to have to pull the stuff off it, which unless it's unlike others I've seen really shouldn't be that hard, since you have to do that to do most heavier maint anyways such as valve adjustments and that.

Ya it isn't that hard to take the wind jammer off... its the rear rack i really dont wanna take apart. I couldn't tell you if its been off in 31 years. Guess I'll have to take a long hard look @ it and see if I wanna tackle it... I gotta take most of the stuff off to do intake boots and check the valves before spring. engine work I can handle. I've been thru 1 manual tranny in my life and it wasn't a successful ending. thanks for encouragement none the less

              Tranny

I am guessing your tranny experance was auto related The tranny here is pretty simple. We are just talking about back cutting some steel to make it stick in gear on a primitive 5 speed 70's trans, something Yamaha SHOULD have done in the 1st place, and did on later replacement parts. I know, getting to it is most of the battle, you might also be able to do some other stuff if you decide to "go where where no one has gone before"[ Sorry, Star Trek thing, good luck with your bike

no i dont mess with car trannys... ive seen inside one of those and said no thank you lol! I attempted a dirt bike tranny in my youth. it didn't go well.. ya the cutting looks kind of simple. its the getting it apart and putting it back together that is the road block. I'm sure once I get a quote from a shop I'll make myself do it. I'm sure they will not be kind. Most shops anymore charge astronomical shop fees. I just dont want to screw something up. This bikes been in my family too long for me to wanna mess it up.

                  Cool

Thats cool, Be hard to find a shop that even knows or does the dremel fix. I can tell your not happy and I am not trying to make you less happy, was just trying to help, drop from under, flip over or what ever, it needs to remove, dremeled and reassembled. Seems like my imput is just makeing you madder, not my intention Just trying to tell it like it is. Even if a member close by comes by, you will have to flip, lift or somehow get inside it, good luck with your bike, hope all goes well and back on the road and shifting great again

I know of a shop around me thats pretty familiar with xs11's... guess I'll see what they say. Flipping the bike defiantly seems to be the way to do it. or hoist it from the front end with a gantry or chain lift. No worries my man. thanks again

                      Hey

Hey, if you got a shop that knows XS1100's close by, you are way ahead of most of us! That is a great thing, especialy if one of the tech's has one! Or had one No one likes to hear that the fix involves tearing apart their baby, so I just hope you get her fixed the way that puts that smile back on your face, they do "rock" when working right

Sorry to hear about your Dad, I mean that. Nice you have memories with your Dad and ridding on the XS His, your bike won't be harmed with the fix. All members will walk you through it and if you got a local member to help, even better If it is slipping, will need fixed. Although, you can ride by skipping the 2nd gear with no bad results except preformance. Hope someone local can help you with the fix. It is nice you honer your Dad in his bike, best of luck and God Speed, with you and your Dads bike

                            ddragon,

I am a procrastinator. I put off fixing mine as long as I could. I chose to buy new gears, and I kept them sitting on the shelf for months. Don't do this job until you can get in the proper state of mind. It might be fun. I had my bike upside down for two or three months and I still managed to get it back together without issue.

I don't know your mechanical inclination, but most of this is pretty straight forward. TC's posted instructions are very good. Your luggage rack won't be an issue. Remove the trunk first. The rack comes off my Special with four bolts. Yours should be similar. Take your time and do it right. It's a labor of love. Strip the bike of lights, mirrors, etc., so none of it gets damaged.

The only real tricky part to this operation is the remove and install of the countershaft. Mine came out somehow, but putting it in was another story. I'll bet I walked away from it five times in disgust, and I are a mekanik! If I had another one to do, I could do it in a minute. It just wasn't designed to come out through the pan, but it will, and it will go back.

I recommend "the washer move" while you're in there. Instructions are on here someplace.

Soon, you'll be riding along again, enjoying the happy memories of riding with your dad!
