80SG front foot peg rubber replacement

So, don't hate me, but I got NOS replacement rubber for my SG for 1$ (+s/h)here:

Here's my question:
How do I get the old ones off? (without totally destroying them)
I read somewhere that to get the new ones on, just spray the post with a little hairspray.
I'll take a pic tommorow showing what I got and to show some of the internals to the shaft and stuff.

I figure that the old rubber might be better than my current ones on my G so I can swap those out too.

Old one

The Old one is most likely toast, cut it off. You can put in in the oven at 200 for 10 min and hope it will lossen up. As to install the new one, warm it up, then dish soap and water will help it slide on and when dry, it will hold like new

I would do it like I put on hand grip and put in into a bowl with some very hot water like some that was boiled in a kettle let sit a couple of minutes then try and remove using gloves as the part will be hot.

Rubber

The rubber is so much tougher on the foot pegs then the handlebars. They take lots of work to get on. The dish soap hepls and heating the rubber parts helps also, but still a b!tch to get on. Two guys with gloves and a bench clamp to hold the part, lots of soap and hot rubber, and you still need some luck IMHO

Lube them with Armor All or something similar. I use it to install the carburetors, air box, tires, etc. The product I usually use is CARQUEST Vinyl & Rubber Dressing. It looks like grape drink. Armor All will work just as well.

A thought on tubular rubber pieces.
When pulled from one end, they tend to get smaller inside.
(think Chinese finger trap).
When pushed on the end, they tend to expand inside. If you can figure a way to support the inside edge of the rubber, and press the outside of the steel peg, with some lubricant, it might press out.
That would mean a press would have to be used.
I'm sure the factory used a press to put them on.

I "think" they might have been molded on from the factory, that is whay I say th OEM is toast But, if you are replacing it, it must be toast anyway, so cut it off. The reason I said use a vice to hold the peg, is, that way you can push it on like CZ said and use expanding rubber as you push, instead of contracting rubber if you tried to pull it on. Ther reason you use dish soap as a lube insted of oil or other stuff, is, when it dries it loses all lubracating properties and helps hold the new part in place instead on letting it stay slippery, not a good thing on a foot peg when rideing, good luck with your bike

If they are anything like mine, just save yourself the time and cut them off . I tried heating mine with a heat gun, spraying lube in, etc. on them and ended up destroying them anyway trying to get them off. Best I got was using a screwdriver to lever the end, and then pushing off from the inside, but that rubber is tough, and will come apart before it stretches much, especially the old ones.

But I may be wrong, maybe mine were glued on .

Hairspray recommendation is great for the grips too

What do the old ones look like? If they're still good, leave them on until they aren't. If they're no good, split them with a knife. Eventually, they fall off. BTDT

Oh yah if you have an air compressor you can insert the end of the blow tube under the outside edge of the rubber and with the free hand form a seal around the inside edge, give it a shot of air and simultaneously squeeze and pull and they may come off in one peice. This method works well on stubborn handgrips. YMMV

There's a ridge on the footrest that holds the rubber on, use a flat blade screwdriver to lift the rubber away from this and it'll slide off. (

Marty, the current ones are decent,(the ends are comming off) but I've got the new ones and I want to make the bike look good!
I plan on eventually using the old rubber on my G, once I find the proper pegs.

GLoweVA, I have an extra set of front pegs in good condition from my '80G, if you have trouble with the R&R of yours, that You may have for the cost of shipping if you'd like. LMK

Schming, My 80G currently has the wrong pegs on it. ( I think they're the older 78-79 ones. (not wide))
My SG has the not so bad rubber that I'm replacing with the new rubber.
If the ones off your 80G are okay, I'd love to have them for my G.
Then I can compare the rubber on those and see if I want to but my old SG rubbers on those or not.
