  • Airbox hoses and petcock?

What all connects to the front of the airbox? This is what mine looks like. Is something missing?

Also someone removed the vacuum line from my petcocks. They are always on Prime now. I want to be able to turn them off if setting them up the way they were originally is not a pain i the butt!!!?

    Airbox

The large tube should be the crankcase vent tube and goes down to the motor case to vent gases that build up from blow-by and heat etc. Not sure about your year, but the open tube looks like it was for carb overflow venting. As to your petcocks, are you leaving them on prime even when the bike is not running if so, that could be causing some of your problems as there is no fuel shut of to keep your carbs from overloading with gas except the needles valves, which can seep while sitting and over fill the carbs causing a rich condition at start up and posably, gas in your oil The vacuum leads on the petcock should be hooked up to the intake manifold vacuum so at start up, they open the fuel flow and shut it off when not running, when petcocks are set to "run". Others with the exact same year / model as yours can add more info as to your exact set up

Is that big hose hooked up to anything at all right now? If not it goes to the big nipple there in the center as OEM said for the crank case vent. Those two little ones look as thought they are not drilled out and If your German 81 is anything like our 81's then they are not for anything. The early models had those nipples drilled out and had a brass insert in it and they were used for carb vents like OEM said but they carb vents were changed to an internal (inside the carb itself) vent starting in 80 so then Yamaha just didn't drill those nipples out but left them there.

The white plug-up there has nothing attached to it and yes the Big Fat Black one is hooked up to right there where its at!!! Whats the white plug-up for? Since there nothing attached to it I assume im sucking unfiltered air in and thats what worried me?

Over here there is nothing other than the crank vent and the carb vents that hook to the airbox. You may just have to open up the airbox and see what is inside.

The crank vent hooks to a small plenum inside the airbox that has 4 runners coming off of it that stick down into the intake tubes going into the carbs.

unless there is something different over there, or if someone added something to the box, but I dont know what that other nipple is.

Could it possibly be where the hose for my petcocks hook to create a vacuum to actuate them? My petcocks arent vacuum operated anymore. Someone removed all that before i I got the bike. Im just trying to figure out whats going on with what I got!

No, the petcocks would have connected to the vacuum ports on the engine side of the carbs on the intake boots.

                hi anachy,

if u have the stock petrol tank then u dont have vac
operated petcocks, our bikes come with the 'óccy' which
sounds like it may have been removed from ur bike,
Nate has u covered regarding the air box, the thick crankcase
hose goes to the middle of the air box, our carbs have no
vent hoses as the vent is situated at the back of the carb bell.
so no other hoses go to the air box.

if u have the occy removed,
and uve plumbed up the fuel line to the back of
the petcock and blocked off the front,
then u can use the lever up and down for on and reserve
or turn the lever sideways and that will turn the fuel flow off.

                    Dude

Dude, it is not like your bike is a not running or a "POS". move slowly, do you need to make big changes to go for a ride, Hell no. Lets just slow down and tweek your bike into submission, do you think? Or, just go wild, with no understanding about the differance between a ero, US and Frankin bike It did / does run, lets keep it that way if we can

Petcocks only have a small leak but should be OFF in any other position besides PRIME cause there they flow freely like they should!!! THEY ARE HOOKED UP JUST LIKE U SAY ABOVE

Your from Australia huh? Cant remember seeing your message. Unfotunately I dont get a email for every reply I get. I wonder Why NOT? Is there also a way to delete a post when im done with it? Cause usually I dont go back to a THEAD once I've fixed the problem..

Well since your from Down Under and Europeans and you guys have alot in commen, cool!!!! Your bike should be closer to mine then! Ya my German Spec chart says something completely different than what most guys here tell me. Mine says I have 110 Mains all around and a 40 Pilot. I will know once I look inside. Just watched your YOUTUBE video your bike sounds GREAT!!!!!

the post was earlier in this thread i think,
yep ur and mine are pretty much identical,
tho the vins are slightly different,
my vin is 5n5 where urs is 5k7, other than the length
of the rear guard, the bikes are identical.

if ur running the stock air box then the 110 which are
stock is best suited, the pilots are 40 but with no bleed holes
compared to the us specials that have bleed holes and are 42.5.

just take particular notice to the slide needles clip position,
if urs are sitting in the middle position try running it 1 leaner
by using the clip in the 2nd position from the top.

u dont have the stock tank for the sports,
its been changed out for a standard tank,
if the tank has the stock petcocks then they would be
vac operated, hopefully thatl help with some of the confusion.

"your bike is a hybrid of both the standard(tank) and special(forks/gauges,etc.) along with a few from the XJ11 model, the swirly wheels, front calipers, linked brakes, etc.!" That all I know and Im still trying to catch on!!!! ITS A MUTANT BRO or were they made like this originally?
