You could try bending the wave washer a bit to tighten up the pressure on the selector mechanism. When you say they are leaking from the off position, are they dripping on the engine or still leaking thru the spigot?2H7 (79) owned since '89

Petcock
They are kinda basic, if you put new gaskets and seals in them. Did you make sure the post was lined up with one of the 4 holes in the new gasket and press in the lever without twisting the seal out of place Also, the two screws can leak if not OEM with good gasket / washers on them, and check to make sure the tank is metal to seal on the "O" ring that mates it (the factory seals are ovel not round, but the round ones will workOriginally posted by Jelmo11 View PostOk so my petcocks are leaking horribley and the are in the off position I have rebuilt them and still they leak I'm lost and need help is there another fix or what guys help me out here1979 XS1100 Special (Mad Max, OEM) Current

That would be my question, did you actually install new seals, or just take them apart and clean them out? It's the seals that go bad usually, so leakers almost always need new ones. A couple of other things to check, is the lever 'face' (that goes against the large seal) smooth/flat? If that's damaged, they can be impossible to stop from leaking. Sometimes 'resurfacing' that on some ultra-fine sandpaper until all pits/scratches are gone will do the trick, but again, you'll need new seals as the originals will probably be bad from the bad lever. Also make sure the surface that goes against the tank is flat; I've seen these slightly bent and they won't seal. If you pull the filter towers off, run a file across the surface until it's flat.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Petcock? am I allowed to say that?
As to the inside of your petcocks being to rough to not seal, never heard of that, as they are sealed from MFG till now? Just make sure that the "NEW" gasket is in place with the post that holds it there If you are useing old gaskets and seals, BUY NEW ONES, they are cheap and all over Ebay and others And remember, the gas might be leaking from the tank seal / screws most dont leak from inside if rebuilt1979 XS1100 Special (Mad Max, OEM) Current

I have opened up a petcock or two that had the maing surface of the lever pitted from sitting in bad gas or empty tank. Using 600 grit paper followed by 1000 grit cleaned them up nicely.Life is what happens while your planning everything else!
