  • Restoring some bags

Ya'll are always saying you like pictures...

Now that I’m riding Bagapotomus, I must say that the 30 year old Vetter bags and trunk are very useful for the daily commute and bringing home the groceries. I did a refresh a few months ago and thought I’d share.

First the covers were removed and washed with dish soap and water.

I used scotch-brite pads and 320 grit on a DA sander to sand off the decals and prepare the original finish.

The locks, clips and acorn nuts are reused. The hinge bolts and locknuts were replaced with stainless. The broken spring clips that hold the side bags to the mounts are replaced with new from the Vetter web site:

    http://craigvetter.com/pages/Online_...ent_Parts.html

Three coats of Nason Peterbuilt white acrylic enamel with a catalyst hardener reduced just enough to flow out and still flash dry quick enough to keep out bugs and nasty stuff outside. Really need a nice calm toasty Texas day to do this step..

The black plastic was sprayed inside and out with PJ1 engine case paint. Although a high heat engine paint, it binds well with plastic. It covered well and makes black plastic look like new. Learned about this stuff on XS11.com!

Back together and ready for the road. TC recommended swapping LED lights for the four tail/brake lights on the trunk to reduce power needs. It’s like Christmas when the brakes come on at night!. It sure is handy carrying a flashlight, extra oil, rags, rain gear, tools, and clothes… even extra shoes. Also, it’s a part of history. When our bikes were new you had to “build your own” touring bike before the manufacturers started making their own.

When the horse is dead, dismount.

                Bags

Thanks, I run with bags sometimes also, but I have to admit, all that space you have would come in handy at times, especialy at the grocery store Mine zip off and the homemade supports are held on by one bolt per side, so I can go from carry to scary in one min.

Switch from the hoop style to individual 3point style and your lowers will fit fine.

I agree. Even the smaller 2-point guards will allow the lowers to fit just fine.

I like the look you're created, but I cringe when I hear that someone has painted the black plastic of the Vetter luggage. I've never seen that turn out well. The plastic flexes a LOT and the paint always ends up flaking off, looking really bad. Maybe you'll be lucky, but keep an eye out for peeling paint. I'm still searching for a direct replacement for the weatherstripping that slides into the grooves around the luggage lids though. Vetter told me it was a custom item he had made for the original production, but has never had any made since.

Yep, and every time I ask, he says he is thinking about having some made but hasn't done so yet. Which of course isn't much help. I've not tried yet any of the fusion paints that are made for plastic, but I'm not sure that they would fair any better, although they might adhere better since they are designed to stick to plastic.

I've tried those Cy, and while they do stick better than 'regular' paints, they're still not the best. They work fairly good on textured plastic, but smooth finished sufaces will scratch easily. You need to rough the surface to get any sort of adhesion and make sure the surface is clean...

IIRC the fusion paints are by duplicolor, which also has a product called "plastic primer" that is a primer that adheres to plastic pretty well and then lets you put other normal paints on top of it. I've used it on plastic containers for geocaching with pretty good success, as long as the container doesn't flex it works really well. That might work well in concert will some nice color matched paint on the vetter bags and such.

I've thought a couple times about smoothing out the pebbled finish on my bags and trunk and painting them to match the rest of the painted surfaces on the bike. My biggest concern is if it would look good or if it would look tacky, cause it would be almost impossible to go back .

Looks good. Seemed like a lot of steps dissembly & all, But end result is impressive. Black seems almost invisible, matches other bike colors. White stands out & looks good with fairing.
