Before this gets into being a hot button topic discussion, it seems like we have 2 camps/ideologies regarding the zerk fitting, and it's effectiveness in lubricating the final drive splines. CZ has some good analysis and points, supported by a fellow knowledgeable member and rider with 80+K miles without ever taking the FD/Swingarm apart. It would seem that in a perfect situation, the grease would get and stay where it's supposed to, however, as Scott and another have pointed out, the grease often gets beyond the retaining washer and into the swingarm, leaving the final drive splines/chamber relatively dry and free of ample grease!

Seems like folks can use the zerk fitting to apply grease to the chamber, but would be a good idea to inspect it's effectiveness during a tire change, to separate the swingarm/FD and physically inspect the chamber for the presence or absence of grease. If ample grease found, then their zerk fitting is working, and they can probably continue to use it alone to provide the required maintenance of greasing the splines. However, if they find that the grease has migrated out of the chamber and into the swingarm shaft, then they have a FD/Swingarm that is loosing it's grease..possibly prematurely, and would be advised to perform an application of grease with every tire change or even more often depending on mileage attained, etc!.

Guys, was just doing this for a test at this point since drive has never been removed, stuffed full of lube over the years and has fairly high miles. Was just gonna run it till I no longer ride, or the splines turned to powder, but curisosity is gonna have me take it off and have look-see when I change out the tire in the spring. Will know then if the oil seperation out of once just lube has gotten to where it's needed or not.

          New grease -- please!

Hey, motoman! I'm not even close to happy with the whole grease and seal deal and I'd gladly leave that entire nightmare behind and never look back!

If the grease you've been using worked then I'll buy a tube of that stuff ASAP!

If it didn't work and was more like trying to splash a couple of quarts of fresh oil over the engine and the drive train every few thousand miles because some of it will seep into the cracks and vents when the bike gets hot then I'll have to keep doing the moly and hammer dance.

I really hope the grease worked!

              Lube

It is important to keep your rear end lubed If your zerk doesn't get the lube to the right part, grab the rear end by both sides, pull them apart, squirt some lube on the parts you can see, then push it to the place you cant see. You will know when it feels right, everything will slide just like it is supposed too

                        Hey folks,

I've been busy working on/repairing co-worker's computers, and didn't do my duties as I should have, and Steve stepped in and made the proper corrections. This site IS a family oriented and supposedly friendly site, many members view and visit the site with their little ones on their laps, or sitting beside them, and it can be very awkward to come across such images on a BIKE SITE. Yes, it wasn't "pornographic", but was still a bit more ADULT and after prime time content. In the past, folks or mods have taken the POP UP images, and just converted them to Active Links, so that IF the viewer wanted to persue and see the image, they just had to click on the link, and the others are not hit with the unexpected POPUP Adult image.

MY CRS was acting up the other night when I viewed this thread and saw his posted image, and didn't edit it right away, my apologies to the masses.
Hopefully this will also serve as a friendly reminder to the members that IF they want to share some images that might be considered a bit more adult in nature but NOT PORNO, that they post just a LINK, to help protect the little ones and their parents from such awkwardness!

                          Hi TC,
there was this fellow in Victorian England who wanted horse owners to put some kinda clothing on their animals because it wasn't decent for them to be in public while naked.
