  • What parts of a XS11 need lubricating??

Bike sat for awhile and now its all squeaky when I push it. What parts need oiling most often?

What's the difference between erotic and kinky?
    Erotic = using a feather
Kinky = using the whole chicken

If it's squeaky when you push it, you may have sticky brakes. The pads should retract enough so as to prevent squeaking there. If they don't, it's time to rebuild/clean the calipers. This should be done annually anyway. Don't forget to add brake grease to the moving parts in the calipers as well.

There are lots of bearings that can be lubed, so basically anything that moves should get some maintenance now and then. Also be sure to lube the control cables with some white lithium grease. Every time the rear tire is changed, you should remove the final drive and grease the shaft/splines (the grease fitting does absolutely nothing, so just ignore it entirely). The steering head bearings should be checked as well, and re-packed as needed.

Don't forget to lube up the nut between the tank and the tail light.

        Awhile?

Depending on how long and where it has been sitting, inside / outside etc. Here in SW Florida and sitting outside, my rotors will start to rust in a few weeks of sitting If you see any rust on them, I would remove it with scottch brite and wash off the dust before riding, if you don't, it can build up on the pads and crystalize and cause it to keep on squeaking

          Greasing the brakes

How thick do you slather on the grease on the rotors?

take the bike out for a good ride
and get some heat into the brakes
with some heavy braking on a straight length of road,
              as long as the brakes
arent sticking this should help with the sqeaking.

Just what kind of lube do you use on that nut between the tank and the tail light? And what do you do if you have two of them?

                      Very exciting this topic

You guys are the nuts!!!!!! Hahaha Thanks for your replys. I did ride it hard and it still squeaks while pushing it around in a parking lot before i take off. It sounds so bad i get everyones attention. It only sat for a few weeks out in the wet and cold. Ill check those rotors i should be able to see the rust build up visually right?

Those other bearing sounds major!!!! I havent had the whole bike apart yet and I really only want to do what I have to since im in 0 degree weather

Why put a grease fitting somewhere for no reason? As far as lubing the rear shaft I heard there was a Pictorial Explanation on this site anybody got the direct link to it im still not so good at finding what im looking for here!

                        More details

Had to edit the message i just inserted above. But then the 10 minute time limit ran out. Anyway to delete it? Cause heres my more detailed Edited Message i wanted to insert (below)!!!

You guys are the nuts!!!!!! Hahaha Thanks for your replys. I did ride it hard and it still squeaks while pushing it around in a parking lot before i take off. It sounds so bad i get everyones attention. Most Germans have pretty new stuff with guarantees I'm serious most people here dont even change their own oil and when they hear me squeaking they look at me me like YOU BETTER NOT DRIVE THAT THING OR YOUR GONNA WRECK!!! lolll sometimes I actually have a crowd around me when i have a motorcycle problem. But noone knows nothin they just STARE!!!!

Well about a month ago I disassembled and cleaned the brake caliperers to making sure they work properly and back up off of the rotors to prevent rubbing. All that work and now it only sat for a few weeks out in the wet and cold and I have the next squeak!!!!! Hope I dont have to take them all apart again? Ill check those rotors i should be able to see the rust build up visually right?

Those other bearing sounds major!!!! I havent had the whole bike apart yet and I really only want to do what I have to since im in 0 degree weather

Why white lithium grease for the cables I've used silicone spray but it didnt hold up that long that much i know. And why put a grease fitting somewhere for no reason? As far as lubing the Final Drive gears I heard there was a Pictorial Explanation on this site anybody got the direct link to it im still not so good at finding what im looking for here! Can I use any kind of automotive grease for lubing the gears up in there?

Here's the link to the Driveshaft Spline lubrication Tech Tip:

                          http://www.xs11.com/xs11-info/tech-t...t-splines.html

At the very, very top of the page, there is a menu "XS11 Info". If you put your mouse over it, it will drop down and you can choose "Tech Tips".

As far as the control cables, I have used silicon spray too. I think I've gone a season on my 650.

I now have a bottle of graphite spray. It works great, but it gets EVERYWHERE (and stains) if you don't hit what you're aiming for or catch overspray.

                          Edit:
If you haven't in a while, definitely check the oil in your middle drive while you're at it!

If you study the layout of the input splines of the final drive system, you will have to be impressed with the ingenuity of the Yamaha engineers.
They solved a lubrication problem with an inexpensive manufacturing solution.
Lubricate the joint EXACTLY as the manual specifies, and you are good to go. CZ

                              rust?
Guzzi disks are cast iron and they'll grow a coat of rust as you park for lunch on a rainy day but
XS brake disks are some kind of Stainless Steel and I've never seen one that rusted yet.
WTF kinda acid rain air are you guys trying to breathe down there?
