    Oil

    Dumb me, I thought the oil race down the middle and the drain holes were where the oil went. I never thought the shaft seal was what sealed the crankshaft You learn something every day

      No matter what, in order to keep the bearing fully oiled, there must be enough pressure to force oil out from under it, and some of it does go to that seal. That's why a seal has to be there, that's NOT a dry spot, but it's not splashed either.

      BTW, that's NOT a drain, that's a pressurized feed line to provide oil to the rod bearings, and I believe to the other mains as well, but they may be fed individually from the case, I haven't looked at the drawings to see that part, but I can tell you, that channel and those holes are not drains, those are under pressure. Drainage just like all the other bearings is out the sides of the bearings, it's how oil pressure is maintained, the oil has to SQUEEZE out past the bearings through the bearing clearance to get out, otherwise if it went through that big hole, you would have no pressure, and that's why an engine with worn bearings will have low oil pressure as one of it's symptoms.

        Wow, I learned something again I thought that the oil pump forced the oil through the crankshaft then through those groves and accross the bearing surface I guess all those years I spent as a high performance motor builder and all the schools I went to for mechanical engineering got it wrong What do they know, they just design these things

            And where do you think the oil GETS to the crankshaft? Those passages there are how it gets to the crankshaft and to the passages to feed the rest of the bearings. I've built more than a few engines, had more than a few courses in engine maint and design, including in the military.

            But since you already know everything that's fine, I'm done trying to discuss the issue. This will be my last post on the issue.

            I will not respond to anything further in this thread, go ahead and do what you will.
