    Hi Jim,
Buying a bargain bench grinder and mounting polishing mops on it will be more economical than replacing those power drills as they burn out.
And the forks are forking pretty but what about the insides?
Polishing off the flaking clearcoat on the outside of the sliders won't improve the fork performance at all.
OTOH taking the fork to pieces and washing out 30+ years-worth of crud from the insides won't show at all but will most likely make the bike ride nicer.

          Cam chain

One more thing I've discovered I need for my restoration is a new cam chain. The adjuster was all the way extended so I think it's best to replace the thing now rather than having to go back in at a later date. I was able to split the master link OK and that was no biggie but my search for a new one is provng to be a PIA. Bike Bandit is out of stock as well as Old Bike Barn. I tried PNM but couldn't find one, just master links, plus I find their site rather hard to navigate and cookies is a problem for me. I did find a company by the name of Panther Chains but they sell a few difererent sizes i.e. regular, Heavy duty, etc. Does anyone else know of a source? One other thing that caught my eye was while changing out the mid and rear-end gear oil, although the oil itslef didn't look all that bad, the fine metal powder from the gears that had collected on the magnets was far more than I've ever seen on any other machine I've owned. Could it be that I'm the first guy in 31 years to check those two things? I mean There was a ton of crap accumulated on those things.

I personally use a 4-way gang valve with a single vacuum gauge and open one valve at a time.

This is actually the valves I have, they just came in a plastic holder from Jack's Aquarium and Pets:

What you need are pretty much just a plain old plastic or metal valve. There are a ton of options with aquarium supply, you just need the right size for your tubing.

Here's an example of 2-way valves:

                  No need for bench grinder.......Polisher????

Thanks for the suggestion, Fred!!! While I have it apart, I think I WILL take the forks apart and do as you suggested!!! As far as getting a bench grinder, this works best for me.........http://jimphoto.freeprohost.com/Yamaha78/yam78_025.JPG I use this when I have the part off the bike and can do it standing up!!! This one, I assure you, WON'T burn out!!! Jim

                      http://www.ebay.de/itm/290485257112?...84.m1423.l2649

I need 4 of whatever u posted but im still not sure exactly which ones will work and fit my hoses and if they are adjustable how am i gonna get all 4 of em open to the same exact specs? Originally there was a peice of fine bore thick wall clear plastic tube to do the dampening but your saying these little valves will do the same thing? If a $1 part does the job.....AWESOME!!!!!

For controlling the spiking on vac gauges for carb sync, you adjust each valve till the gauge almost stops moving, then do the next one till all 4 barely jump at all, any of the adjustable ones will work, the fish tank tubeing is about the same size as the carb tool tube

The idea is not to get the "exact" same resistance at the valve, it is just to calm the gauge so you can read it, they will all have a different amount of vacuum till in sync, just make sure you dont close any of them completly or the gauge will not move when you adjust the carbs

If you really want to go lo-buck, try this: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=986

Same idea, only with a single gauge. Works every bit as well, just takes a bit more time. One advantage is you don't need to worry about gauge calibration (i.e. do they all read the same) as you use the same gauge for each carb. This is what I use...
