Looks like about about 6 or so locations listed in Ca. I think it's not totally accurate as I am aware of one station in Sacramento that sells race gas, which is ethanol free, but the high octane isn't a particularly good thing for our engines either, at least not THAT high octane.

No problem, just commenting on the sucky fact that it's a bit inaccurate and that most of those listed at least in Ca are sellers of race case, which is NOT a good thing for these bikes, the octane is too high and will cause the engine to carbon up. If you can be guaranteed to get that octane level all the time no matter where you go, you could advance the timing to make up for it and it would be good, but the you would HAVE to run that octane level all the time. IMHO if you can't get non ethanol gas at normal octane levels, your better off just running the gas with ethanol in it, at least until they go to primarily having the new 15% crap in the pumps. That stuff has me worried, cause a lot of stations aren't going to bother to carry anything else, it would be too much trouble, which it going to mean a lot of trashed motorcycle engines and invalidated warranty's.

Never owned a 79, so not aware of it having the "ping" issue. Other than that, you WILL have knocking issues on any of the XS11's burning premium fuel, no matter how crappy the fuel or where you live(sea-level or 8,000ft.). Octane ratings are calculated differently than back in the day. Regular fuel or mid-grade at best is what these scoots were designed to go BANG at the correct time on..........then and today. Anything more is a waste of money and hard on the revolving internals.

Octane

Octane, the 2nd most misunderstood thing with our bikes (right after motor oil) 1st higher octane rating, regardless of "RON, MON AKI OR RdON" NEVER cause more pre-detonating in ANY motor, NEVER I could go on trying to explain it, but if anyone wants to truly understand what a "higher octane rating" means, then you can read here.

my bike was having the same rattle,
i was messing with the carbs today and lowered
the float levels a whisker and the rattle has gone away,
if the bikes running soggy down low under acceleration
might be worth a shot, (under 3000rpm)
lower the floats by .25mm from what there set at
and see how they go, dont lower the float to much otherwise
you'll need to change jets to compensate and itll create
more/other problems.
wont cost anything to try just a little time.

Mine runs great No bog with the sound, and goes away with a little more twist on the gas

Does anyone have a copy of that Yammer TSB, that supposedly explains the noise?

Yamaha CLAIMS in the TSB that it's not harmful and that it's just an annoyance, and some have replaced the vacuum advance with the one recommended in the TSB and not had it fix the problem. I for one tend to just get on it more to avoid it, and understand that because my fairing acts as a megaphone so that I hear every little noise from my engine, including the gurgling of the oil going back down to the pan. I can literally tell the difference in the sound between my Windjammer III and my Windjammer IV, the III is far less of a megaphone. I'm really thinking about putting some egg crate foam on the inside surface of the fairing to deaden the sound just to make me feel better.
