  • Deleting Octy

So I've got the carbs apart, & I'm thinking I will run the fuel line direct from the petcocks to the bowls on when I reinstall. If I plug the vaccum line on the intake will I be alright?

    Octy

You can remove the octy and have alot more room to work in there, carb adjustment ect. not to mention easy on and off of the tank I still run mine and it can save your butt if you forget to turn off the fuel (any gas leak from carbs means an oil change or possabule replace rod and main bearings The best way to remove IMO is to run the Prim / ON leads from the tank to a "Y" connector, then connect the two remaining feed lines (left and right side of the tank) going to the carbs to each other with two "T" fittings and a pice of hose before connnecting to the two carb fuel inlets ( if you don't do this crossover connection you will only be supplying fuel to one set of carbs at a time if you should need to switch to "Resurve" while at speed , the octy does this for you with its mix of all tank feeds into one chamber before splitting to the two carb feeds, this also helps insure even flow to all 4 carbs during "ALL" operations) Hope this helps, good luck

      Vacumm line

Sorry, forgot your question about the vac. line Yes, you will need to plug the vac. line if you do the mod as I discribed. Just plugging the vac line and leaving plummed "as is" (octy still in place) will not work right, you will only be able to run on the "Prime" setting on your tank as the Octy valve will not open without vacumm attached, so no flow in the "ON / Resurve" positions

If you're going to remove the octy, you might want to do this: http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=32980

This will eliminate any possibilty of fuel spills, is entirely reversable, and converts your special petcocks to full manual operation. All you need is one line from each petcock to each pair of carbs and plug the vacuum line at the carb boot.

Ok, I see you could "prim" the carbs by just turring to the "run" position The Octy is designed in such a way to "mix" the right and left fuel leads in the "Run / ON" positions to keep even flow to both sides of banks of carbs all the time, and when turrining to "Resurve" one petcock at a time, or just turn "one" petcock, while flying down the highway, maybe not nessasary, but a nice feature. The "prim" setting bypasses this "mix" and alowes you to find out which set of carbs is leaking before starting the bike (Right or Left bank) when troubleshooting, a big help to me when I was working on mine this week. This feature would be negated with my soluition also, but a nice feature with the octy in place I think Your fix must work fine also To me, as he has the carbs off already, just useing the hose's, clamps and "T's" you already have on the octy, all you need is two "Y" fittings ($0.50) and you dont need to drain the tank and take apart the petcocks or do much of anything to go back to the Octy if you decide you want the leak protection it provides (after a few oil changes, or new bearings) and you still have the all 4 carb fuel "mix" that Yamaha thought was important Either way the bike will run

Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking Crazy Steve's fix will work for me. I may just plug the "on" port on the left petcock, as it may be leaking any way. (Pulled the nipple out trying to get the old fuel line off.) I don't see any issues with just running through the "prime" port during normal operation. Am I correct?

The problem with using the 'prime' port is you won't have any 'reserve'; when you're out of gas, you're out...

You really should try to get that 'on' nipple back into the petcock; you might try 'tinning' it with solder, then driving it in. The solder shouldn't need to be very thick, just enough to give it 'color'...

+1 with Steve on fixing that petcock before blocking, you don't want a leak over the HOT stuff, and could fall out if loose altogather After that, running on "prime" only would work, especialy if your "low fuel light" works (or fuel gauge if you have one)

Thank you XSLevi, you gave me an idea for my bike. I went out today for some "test riding" and stopped for a burger, turned off my fuel (I thought) and took my good ole time eating and admiring my bike through the window When I got to my bike to start it, it just cranked It starts 1st time, everytime when all is well Turns out, I had turned p-cocks to "PRIME" The PO had them backwards, so I was used to that direction, I corrected them last week and forgot Minor rich problem, opened the throtle and cranked she fired right up Your idea about blocking off the prime at the tank is a great one for me, I never need it and it "can cause problems" On the "rare" occasion I need to "prim" I can just turn to "run" and suck on the octy vac line for a few seconds so thanks for the idea

                          Two XS110's and no Octy

This is a question, and the thread seemed appropriate. I have purchased two XS1100's (1978 and 1979) and NEITHER of them had the fuel diaphgram that the book calls for (octipus). They both have vacuum operated petcocks and I would like to know if it is necessary to buy the octy for them??? The one I just purchased has been rebuilt, and the older one was just plain a MESS!!! The book has a photo of the vacuum operated petcock, but no explanation!!! HELP??? Jim

Vacuum petcocks IMHO was the best set-up on these scoots compared to the octy. If you don't know, put some fuel in the tank with the petcocks in the on position. If gas runs out the petcocks, take them off, apart clean any build-up off, make sure no holes in the diaphram(or fuel can be pulled through that vacuum port), clean gasket area, ever so lightly stretch the spring, put it all back together and on the tank. Normally no need for a petcock kit.

The '78 is a standard, and won't have one, assuming the bike still has the OEM-style tank on it. Same will be true if the '79 is a standard; only the Specials used the octy as their petcocks aren't vacuum operated. The standards had that function built-in to the petcocks...
