    82-84????

    Yamaha gave you guys up there three years of the XJ? Those bas^%ds! We only had it for one year. As you may know, I'm parting out two 82 XJ's, and one of them was a runner when I bought it. I put a few miles on it before my wife and I started to restore it. We had some disagreements on how some of the work should be done, so she went out and bought her own bike...an 84 FJ1100! I really liked the way the XJ felt, the ride and seating position. It had the obligatory first AND second gear problem. Well, we got pregnant with twins, and the XJ project didn't just get put on the back burner, it was taken of the stove...for eight years. That's when I decided to part it out. I really wish I had finished the project, as I really like the XJ. I have used a few pieces from the XJ's on my 80 SG. The engine, wheels and rear air shocks. I took the trans from one of the bikes and put it in the the other, and put that in my bike. I just put the carbs from Organ Donor in Twilite Special a couple of weeks ago. What a difference! Any way, getting back on track... I didn't know the Midnight Specials had linked brakes. My Clymer manual says nothing about it.

      That explains it, Thanks Mitch. I was under the impression that all specials had a linked sys, and therefore would provide a broader base of parts from which to choose.
      Now I know that I have more of one off problem, when problems arise, and I also know that more of the xj stuff will fit!

        Well, I finally got to do some testing and installing on the conversion. The day started by getting a flat on the way to my buddy's house to do the work - No Fun.
        I switch out the rear MC without too much trouble and routed the lines to the front. Decided to start with one fron t and one rear. Connected everything and started to bleed. Front bled nice and fast. Went to rear and could not pull fluid through. Pulled the MC and removed the proportioning valve and opened it up. Yuck, full of rust and gunk. Spent about two hours taking it apart and cleaning it up. Nice and shinny inside now. Went to bleed the rear with the mighty vac - no go. It appears because of the proportioning valve you have to pump the MC to get presure to open the porp, valve. Got an intial bleed and will let it set and rebleed when I get the tire fixed later in the week.
        As far as testing, I collected a full stroke of fuid to see how much volume was pumped. It was not as much as I expected. After considering the volume of a piston. I don't think that there is enough to effectivly work 2 fronts and a rear. Also, seeing how the proportioning valve works and the fact that it is not adjustable, I do not think it will meter correctly with the additional load of the additional piston. I think I am going to stick with the rear and 1 front on the rear MC and 1 front on the front MC. After I get it all together and tested I am going to replum with SS line and eliminate some of the connections.
