  • Fat Boy Mufflers

Hey guys I have been using this great site for about year now getting my SH into better shape. Couldn't have done half of it without all of the info on this site. The bike was in pretty good condition when I got it except that the mufflers were rotted out. So I tried the JC Whimpy slipons, and to say the least was not impressed. So I decieded to go with the fat boy mufflers as my headers are in great condition. I just got some in off of ebay that were listed as fat boy mufflers but i am not sure about that. The mufflers have a cross over pipe on them. On the one muffler the cross over is far enough away from the muffler body that it will easily be discarded when fitted to the bike. However on the other the crossover is actually butted up against the housing of the muffler body, so there would be no way to cut it off. My question is did I not get the right pipes or is this normal. And even if I did get the wrong pipes is there anyway that i could somhow close off the opening to the one crossover. When mounted it will be on the inside bottom of the pipe at approx. 45 degrees toward the center of the bike, almost completly out of sight. Thanks for the help in advance. This site is has allready helped tons.

      oil filter coolers and exhaust

Does my 81SH have an oil cooler? The site says that the exhausts they have for the XS's wont fit on bikes with factory oil coolers???? My bike has the cap over the oil filter with fins on it ...I think someone said that if this cap was long with fins then it was considered the oil cooler???? I need new exhaust since it has pin holes in the collectors and the whole rig headers to mufflers was welded together by the PO. Help...

I think the oil cooler they are talking about would look like a radiator and have hoses going to it.

The oil cooler is visible in this photo of my 'H. You can't miss all the plumbing if you've got one.

              Never Mind

I looked on Bike Bandit and it showed the adapter plate and oil cooler for the H model...my 81SH doesn't have it....could have used one the other night in the parade when I overheated the clutch....So I guess regular exhaust will fit....

Thanks for the info and I may have to check it out if these HD mufflers dont work out. I was able to get them rather cheap so I was hoping to make them work. But like you said its to cold right now to be doing to much.

I put a pair of Sportster mufflers on my 80 XS11 Mongrel. They look and sound great. Not bad for $20 mufflers.

Yeah the HD pipes can be had very cheap. I was able to get mine for $30 for the set, with the headers. I think they should work as far as size and mounting is concerned. There is just the cross over on the one that I have to find a way to seal. I thought if I could find some kind of a metel cap piece to seal it with I would just bolt that on and everything should work. I can only imagine how great they are going to sound. We'll see when it gets a little warmer.

One more thing I just thought of was the stand off for the center stand. When I put on the JC Whitney mufflers I didn't worry about it and just let the center stand rest on the pipes. Partially because I was too lazy and partially because I knew I wasnt going to leave those mufflers on very long at all(sound). Has anyone here had to modify a stand off? any good suggestions on how to go about it? Thanks for the help guys.

What do you mean? Remove the center stand because it interferred with the pipes? If that is what you mean, yes, I did that, and if you do the same, save the center stand for maintenance. You can easily attach the centerstand when you need to, for things like changing the rear tire.

Sorry for any confusion. What I meant was that the stand off for the center stand is on the OEM muffler, so if you remove the muffler then the center stand rests on the actual new muffler. Over time this will cause a big dent in the muffler. I'm sure that if you leave it this way for a long time it would actually destroy the left muffler as that is where the stand off was for the OEM pipes.

Hope that cleared up what I meant if not maybe I could post some pics of what i'm talking about.

                              I got one

Just use a short narrow piece of metal mounted from the same place as the muffler and bend a 90 at the end of it for the stand to rest on. My Mac came with a thing like this and it worked out fine. I was about 6 or 7 inches long by about an inch wide and 1/8th thickness with a hole on one end and a 90 bent on the other about an inch long. Paint it black and nobody'll notice!!!
