  • 1978e Fuel tank/carb (Help)

Hello everyone. I'm restoring a 78 xs11e gas tank. I really like the shape of the tank mainly cause I'm restoring the whole bike into a cafe racer. Did the acid with the bolts and por15. Turned out great.
One of the bolts that feed into the left petcock snapped. (Murphy's Law) had to be the last bolt I was re-threading to get the extra por15 out of the screw holes. Drilled and used a broken bolt remover tool. To much pressure and crushed the fitting on the left side of the tank.
I was thinking of welding the left side petcock hole shut on the gas tank. Then running T connectors for the gas and vacuum to the carbs. By doing this: I would use only the right side of the fuel tank and only one petcock.
    My questions are:
Would splitting the gas and suction lines from one side of the tank cause improper mixture or suction to the carbs?
Has anyone swapped out a xs650 or xs850 fuel tank onto a 1100?
Lastly: Why are there petcocks on each side of the tank?

Any help would be appreciated. Really don't or want to spend the outargues $$$ on a tank from ebay, but if I'm thinking that there's a reason for the two petcocks on each side.....I might have to..
Sucks cause I'm almost done with the project!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Thanks

The reason for the twin petcocks is to allow for the deep overhang design of the tank. Running just one petcock will be just fine until you get into the reserve level, you can't access the untapped side of the tank and will run out of fuel with about a half gallon remaining on the no petcock side of the tank.
As far as vacuum issues go, if you do choose to run one fuel tap, just cap off the vacuum source at the carb to the unused petcock.
    Hope this helps.

      Hi Mark and welcome,
you could make a replacement gas tap plate & weld or braze it to the tank?
XS650/750/850 tanks have tunnels that are far too narrow to fit over the XS11's twin frame tubes and the largest of those tanks is a gallon shy of the Standard tank's 5.3 USG capacity.
Like Mike sez, one tap works except for getting the gas from the other side of the tank.
On Britbikes you can lean the bike on it's side to get the last of the gas to the tap.
      That's not so easily done on a 600lb XS11.

Leaning the 600lb bike on it's side to get the last of the gas is easy. It's getting it back upright that's not quite as easy .

Thanks for the answers and suggestions. Going to take the gas tap plate approach. I rigged a temporary fuel bottle so I can sync the carbs and until I'm finished with the tank.
