Ok kind of at a stand still with the holiday and ordering some parts I need to continue with the build, so it may be after the holidays before I start the build again.

ok I am at it again, got some parts in. So this is where I started. I found a small flywheel from a local speed shop, it is used but in good shape, Hey for 20 bucks who cares if I destroy it but I didn't because a new one costs 75 bucks. It fits a small block chevy but ford will work also. I had to machine out the center hole to make it fit over the rear pinion flange and weld it in place. Pic no.1

Now all I got to do is get a starter and make my brackets up to fit it on the bike then wire it up to have a push button on the handle bars to make it work. The flywheel is made by bert racing transmissions it is 6 1/2 inches wide and will accept a regular starter, but I want a small starter like a honda civic or subarue.

Loving this thread DCracer! I used to post on the Pirate4x4 forums a lot, and you think you've had your welds criticized, you should see some of the poo-flinging that gets started there . I figure if you can burn through with it, you can weld with it, and it sounds like you have the experience to know what you're doing! I've seen some very pretty welds that have vibrated apart offroad, and I've seen some ugly welds be the only thing standing when the rest of the vehicle is in small, small pieces :P.

thank you, I now have the rear end back together once again and now it is sitting on the jack stands in the rear and the front wheel, no center stand or kick stand. By the way both are u p for sale or trade, I need a good battery box and exhaust system. I still have a bunch of other parts up for sale too.

I found a subaru starter and made my own mount and now is installed and works perfectly. Took some time to fabricate a mount for it though.

one of these marine battery boxes costs ~$20 new:-



Paying the lower cost of a stock car battery instead of an XS11 battery will save you the cost of the battery box.
Having 450 Cold Cranking amps instead of 18 to get you started on frosty mornings is a nice freebie, too.

I don't think I'll have enough room for a battery box like that, but an interesting idea though. I orderd two fenders today should have them in a week or so. Now going to get some 4x8 thin sheet tin or steel as they call it. And try to make a body for the trike.

I'm curious.... did you do a speed calculation on your 'reverse'?

A typical car starter turns around 3000 rpm, so with a 12 tooth drive pinion into that 63 tooth 'flywheel', that means the differential pinion will be turning around 570 rpm. A 4:1 rear-end ratio means the axles will be turning about 140 rpm. With a 26" tall tire, that works out to about 10 mph, or pretty damn fast for 'slow speed' manuvering when backing up....

Or are you planning on fitting a big rheostat (and it will have to be big to handle the starter current) for speed control? And you'll need a bigger battery than the OEM size to turn that starter motor...

Ok if I did this correctly gear ratio on rear is 3.77 tires are 235/60/16 and a 02 subaru gear reduction starter with 10 tooth drive and a new battery for the bike turns it just fine and not very fast. If my math was correct it should be less than 5 mph. Oh if I remember correctly the gear ratio of the bike is 3.31 or the final drive when it was stock. And with my tire size calculator that I used for racing, by measuring outside tire circumfernce I don't have the no.s in front of me but the 17inch tire on the back of the bike and the 16 inch car tire I am using were real close to the same size. So It should be ok then.
