Starter Clutch Problems

OK.... I need to rebuild my starter clutch. Only 1 prob...how do i get to it!!!!
I know its next to starter. i pulled starter, removed the other cover next to it---left side of engine, directly next to starter. Ive checked the xs cd and looked online, but I cant for the life of me find hoew to get to starter clutch. I really dont wanna hve to pay the bike shop "who takes forever" to tow her in and let them do the work. i wont beable to ride til the 05 season!!!

Hey there Lord Grizzlon,

Hate to tell you this, but the starter clutch is buried deep within the engine, the shaft is connected/runs inside the HY-VO chain, the manual shows splitting the cases to get at it!! How do you know/think you need to rebuild the starter clutch!? What oil are you using, and at what temps!! These type of starter clutches like to slip when you use Synthetic and it's very cold!

ill try changin the oil first...less work to do, i ws runnin 50w synth blend for the summer.

Thats the problem, I think. Thick oils tend to make the starter slip also when it is cold. You can still go with syn-blend, but I find better luck with lower numbers, like 10W30. Yours is probably 20W50. The first number is the "cold" viscosity number.

I run 20-50w year round... went through 3 winters with no problem.. until... I added Lucas oil stabilizer.. now mine does not engage sometimes. I have been too broke to change the oil back to straight dino. Was 35 this morning when i left for work... only slipped once.. soon as i get my car fixed, then I will change the oil back.

I remember Honda Goldwings having a starter clutch problem with 20-50 oil but the factory Yamaha oil was 20-40. I doubt 20-50 is going to be too big of a deal. I’d start with a fresh oil change with either Valvoline or Castrol 20-50 and see if that helps.

Cleaning engine

If u want to (flush) your system buy some oil desigined for tractor trailers it has a detergent agent in it run it for 5 to 10 miles then let it drain real good then switch oils it will help clean up ur starter drive and clutch......MITCH
