      Hmph While Nebraska is, well, somewhat flat, Omaha is an oasis of hills. Lincoln however is one of the flattest most boring places on earth. Only place worse is Oklahoma.
      I lived in the Mojave desert for a couple of years. Riding into Palmdale to work in the morning in a snowmobile suit arriving to work with my mustache as one big icicle. Then riding home in 95 degree just plane hot weather. That's why I moved to Oregon, long riding season in some of the most beautiful country I've ever been in.
      82' XJ1100 turned "bagger" with Vetter Fairing.

        Reminds me of the late 60s when my father was working in Tennessee and my mother and I drove to Norman Oklahoma so she could visit some relatives/friends and see the old 'homestead' that she hadn't seen in 30+ years. We got semi-lost, so stopped and asked a local for directions. The guy says we're close, just go down the road we're on and turn just past the 'hill'... well, I look and I don't see any hill... So I ask 'hill? what hill?' and he gives me this look like I'm an idiot and points and says 'that hill'... and names it (don't remember the name). I still don't see any damn hill; this place is pretty much universally flat as far as I'm concerned. My mother leans over and quietly tells me 'he means that bump in the road' (about a 6 ft rise) and I say 'that qualifies as a hill???'

        I live in an area known as the 'Bald Hills' (elevations between 400 and 2000 ft above sea level), so that's a 'hill' to me... Around here, an elevation change of under 10 ft is flat...

          Back in the day I rode the Sandhills (north central/western Nebraska) extensively and its nice scenic country to cruise on your way to the Black Hills in South Dakota. Problem here is the damn wind here cuts right through you! This is my first adventure into naked open rode riding and to me it's as different as night and day. I use to ride into December on dry roads with my old vettered 650 Special (of course I was younger then) but my bikes will be hibernating this year long before that!

            I don't like cold either

            I have a big gumpy vetter on my xs 1100 sf hated it this summer but one 45 deg night and it changed my tune!!I am planning a bat wing fairing and differtn bad set up going to make a79 xs 11 bagger. Will post pics of project.

              You know, the height of the windshield on a fairing makes all the difference in the world on how comfortable it is in the heat. When it gets really hot you DON'T WANT that wind blowing on you. It will just make you hotter, but getting some fresh air does make life better. Two things do that, having the windshield a bit shorter (mine is about 3 inches below eye level for me) and it's vented, and I keep them open most of the time, except for the coldest part of winter (although that's not very cold here). This makes all the difference in the world.

              Now, that said, I am having thoughts of getting the parts to let me take the fairing off in the summer, but I'm not completely sure I want to, cause that wind can dry you out in a hurry.

                A heated vest will work wonders in the cold. In really cold temps the body keeps blood for the torso which causes the hands and feet to suffer. The vest will keep the torso and vital organs warm and allow more blood flow to the extremities.

                In a pinch I have cut up plastic milk jugs and taped them on my handlebars as hand protectors. Looked ugly, but frostbite looks worse!

                  Cold?

                  Cold would be last November taking my bike over to my moms to store it. It was 22F out, so I threw on my duck hunting gear, Insulated bibs, wader jacket, decoy gauntlets, a baclava around my neck, and a full face helmet. Ran 70 mph around town on the bypass. I was warm and comfortable ecept the places the vent holes on my helmet hit my skull. By the time I got to moms I had a headache like you wouldn't believe.

                    Years ago I did all I could do to stay have the shield height over my eye level. Had the tall vetter shield and had the fairing on 1" square tube to boot. My vetter days are over I think but I do miss the music

                      That XS650 in the photo looks to be a 1979 model, or a tail light modified SG.

                      We went on Brent's Key West ride in'08. It was 27F when we departed Fayetteville, GA. As we went south and folks were shedding clothes, my wife was putting them on! She ended up looking a lot like the "Michelin Man".

                        Damn...the memories going LOL! You are right, it is a 79'. For some reason I remember it being newer (hence my signature) but I pulled my insurance file and found the policy and it was a 79'! $44.15 a year for insurance...wish it was still 1996 prices!
