  • Im afraid of the COLD!

I bailed out on my ride this morning. Left the house it was 48f, got 5 miles in and said screw it. I don't get much opportunities to ride so I take them where I get them but I was freaking cold and that's with a full face helmet (i hate) too boot! This sucks...

Get a decent sized fairing for the bike and for yourself. With a decent sized fairing you will be able to ride well into the fall.

48f is not cold. Nobody hates the cold more than I do and 48f should not stop you from riding, fairing or no. You need a decent jacket and some warm gloves. There are many affordable options out there, especially this time of year.

I know your right about that. Back in the day I was all Vetter all the time. This is actually first bike I ever rode on the open road (hiway or interstate) without a fairing. It's taking quite a bit to get used to riding naked but I like the fairing free look. Maybe a windshield of some time is in my future

Yeah...I guess I'm not as hardy as I use to be in my youth...a damn shame

In order to maintain the appearance of my restored 79 standard bike as close to factory as I could, while still keeping the wind off me, I installed a pretty big fork mounted clear unit and it does a good job.

Fork mounted...I had not considered that. I had been looking at some handlebar mounted units. What brand is yours?

Although 48 isn't very cold it can get to you after a little while moving at 60 mph. I use to have a plexi windshield that mounted to the forks and handle bars. That thing can extend the riding season a month or more just keeping the cold air off you. I don't use it anymore, instead I bought a pair of insulated chaps and throw on a fliece under my leather jacket. If its going to be really cold I get out my flannel lined carhartt jeans and wear them under my chaps. Of course none of that matters if you can't keep your hands warm so there is no substitute for warm gloves. The strange thing is, I'm a snowmobiler and have a nice set for riding my sled but they still wont keep my hands warm on the bike, and I never use the hand warmers while riding my sled! One reason its so hard to keep my hands warm on the bike is 1, direct wind at sustained wind speeds greater than 45 on average and 2, activity level on the sled keeps the heart pumping warm blood to the hands and feet. A decent glove and heated hand grips might be your best solution if gloves alone are not enough... GL

I'm just the opposite...I love the cooler months of the year for riding. I can keep warm much easier than I can keep cool.

Not me. I left KC for Tulsa this morning at 6:30 AM and I was frikkin' freezing. Had to stop and let the sun come up a bit.

But, I hadn't anticipated the cooler temps and didn't bring enough clothes. Still, I would rather be sweating than be numb from cold. But that's just me.

I don't know what brand it is because I pulled all the decals and pin striping off it to keep it simple. I got it on e-bay. It mounts to the forks and handle bars. Its wide enough to offer hand protection, tall enough deflect most wind over ones head and long enough to give some protection of the legs. I don't seen to have a pic of it from the front but here's one from the back

Should be plenty of options on ebay.

Also, Jcwhitney.com sells one similar to above. Don't remember price.
