Unknown make of 4 into 1 the rest completely stock 78 E standard model.
17.8 litres for 311 km's rough translation is 47mpg on 95 octane ULP

Hi Jonesy,

I'm not sure how gallons are measured in Oz, there's two different gallons & the one used here in the states is smaller than the other one. The UK gallon is 1.2009 larger than the US gallon. That gives the UK gallon almost one quart more gasoline to check mileage with. On line converter here: http://www.asknumbers.com/VolumeConversion.aspx

If the OZ gallon is the same as the UK gallon then that works out to your getting about 38 MPG in US gallons. Hopefully you folks down under don't have to deal with the BS of ethanol in your gas, it mucks up our fuel systems here & gives us less MPG.

I think I screwed up on the poll but I get 48 miles per Canadian (Imperial)gallon, which is somewhat higher than mileage obtained on a US gallon.

I use a jonesy gallon.
Before Australia went metric there were 8 pints to a gallon (the mother country being the UK I guess thats an imperial gallon)
When we went metric the pint became 600mls/0.6 litres so 4.8 litres to a gallon.

Maybe I best go check out KA1J's converter. and pull my tounge back in

That is still pretty good mileage. In the 22 years I have owned my '79, I've the best I have ever seen is 36 mpg (US). Since we have went with 10% ethanol year round around here, the best I have seen is 32 mpg. Yes, that sucks!

Do you Gents get the ethanol in the gas, or do you get the pure stuff?

I've seen about 34 on my good days, but I suppose I'd get a little better If I didn't like driving so fast.
It seems above 55 til about 75, I open the throttle a whole lot more.
More wind resistance and such.
if I could just ease up a little I'd probably get a few more miles out of a tank.

It's funny, everytime I look down at that speedometer, I see that above 55 it's red.

I have to go 15 miles to the nearest "no ethanol" fuel. You can't get away from it in many states and all or most metropolitan areas.

Yep, in the Peoples Republik of Kalifornia its pretty much impossible unless you can find racing gas. Given that we have two race tracks in the area, we do have a few stations that carry race gas, but it's pricey and octane that high is not good for our engines.

Down here the bigger servos (gas stations) offer 91 & 95 octane as well as a 10% ethanol blend. Not sure if the base stock for the blend is 91 or 95.

Jonesy, you'll see higher numbers at the pump in Australia because the pumps are labeled with the Research Octane Number (RON) of the fuel.


In the US of A and Canada the octane rating shown at the pump is the result of a calculation:
Research Octane Number + Motor Octane Number / 2
RON + MON / 2

I voted 35-39... in reality though, I typically get between 32 and 35 on average for my daily commuting but can easly get 39 on day rides where I spend the majority on my time in 5th gear whether it be at 65 or 80 mph...

100LL plain fuel

I mix 1/2 a gallon to a tank of 91 and it works for me I am a performance freak
on long rides 91. I am getting about 33 MPG and I ride hard!
